Like A French Godfather

I know they're totally different, but I like to think of this and its sequel as that. It's gives me the same satisfied, but craving feeling I get from The Godfather. Some of the themes, and the score just do that to me. ...and the cinematography, and the acting, and the story...breathtaking

Interesting comparison...I think I like it.

This film and its sequel, "Manon des Sources" are both amazing. I was never particularly fond of French Cinema until I watched these two and became a fan. Wonderfully made and a joy to watch.

"Jean de Florette" is also one of the few GĂ©rard Depardieu movies where I can tolerate him. I don't know why he irritates me so. Lol

I'm amazed at how many people have to see this for French class. We had to see things like Mr. Hulot's Holiday, and Claire's Knee. I rather liked Manon des Sources, but must admit that I can never really tolerate Gerard Depardieu, especially in this film!!! Lovely scenery, however...

I am so amazed that any other class watched this movie because our teacher is so into France that he has all his movies in French and even listens to French music! So i just thought it was him :) But the movie was great I love the funny parts because it was for a class so i thought it would be boring but it was good!

Why does Gerard Depardieu annoy you guys? I just curious because I see nothing nothing wrong with him. This actually was the film that make me notice him and admire his acting.

I'm curious too because Gerard Depardieu is one of my favorite actors. After watching him in "Jean de Florette", I made it a point to see his other movies like "Return of Martin Guerre", "Cyrano de Bergerac", "Germinal", etc.

Gerard Depardieu was one of the most gifted French film actors of the 20th century.

I saw JDF for the first time last night and absolutely loved it. Beautiful, well- paced, well-excuted and fantastically acted film. And yes, some similarities with the Godfather films are there, but maybe they are more genre elements than smiliarities to that particular film? (e.g. the recurring theme, countryside setting, different clans)

Thats the way I allways introduced the film to people, its like a French Godfather. I mean its the scope , the acting and the now cult score (thanks to thoses Stella Artois commercials),the way they took a wonderfull book and made an even more beautifull movie, the fact that the great Yves Montand is a bit the Marlon Brando of this film,Because both films have both certain similar theme greed,revenge... all of theses reason makes it easy to compare Jean de florette/manon des source to the godfather.

Le Grand Pardon. i swear that is exactly like The Godfather. Especially the first 20 minutes

reply

Well it is interesting that the opening theme tune of the movie is virtually that of the godfather ...

I thought the same. The music and intrigue obviously do it, but the scenery also resembles the Sicilian episodes in G2. It also struck me (somewhat more tenuously) as a Gallic There Will Be Blood(!?).

Your post is very interesting, even if I am 7 years late to the party. I never thought of such a comparison but I think your impression is a very good. Also, I consider this film to be the best French film ever made and The Godfather probably the best American film ever made.

I really like the comparison. So many things are similar, there's just much less violence and a slitghly slower pacing. Excactly what people would identify as french. It's quite a small scaled epic that works a lot of things into the story. I loved it. I watched both in one run on TV.
