Lots of parodies of Spielberg in this movie.

The frog-dissection sequence makes fun of a similar scene in E.T., and the scene where Bud Cort tries to be friendly with the aliens (and gets zapped instead) seems like a response to the sci-fi optimism of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I guess Tobe Hooper was still smarting from the rough partnership he had with Spielberg during the making of Poltergeist -- though Spielberg later did give Hooper some directing jobs on both Amazing Stories and Taken.

This film rips off lots of other sci-fi, Louise Fletcher eating the frog is a straight rip from the TV series V, albeit a frog instead of a rat. The whole premise is a rip-off of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. Dune with the "sand monsters". The list goes on and on.

You might be shocked to learn the movie itself is a remake of a 1950s movie.

Well, actually...

The original Invaders From Mars was released in 1953, about a year before before the novel The Body Snatchers was first published.
