no real ending?

i have this movie on vhs tape from a clearance sale, it's the german version.

what's funny - in the end when the ufo leaves, all you cann see are the boys parents getting normal again and hugging eachother, the boy staring at the ufo and then it explodes, all in a matter of seconds then the end credits come in.

the ufo explosions that are shown are two different footages of some kind of explosion that do not look like the ufo at all.

how is the ending in the us version? somehow it seems to me the movie was unfinished for budget reasons or whatever and they just threw some explosion footage in to have an ending.

After the ship explodes, the camera pans back into his bedroom and he wakes up from a terrible nightmare screaming for his parents. His parents calm him down and he tries to fall back asleep, but sees lights and hears noise outside. When he goes to the window, its the beginning of the movie all over again--- the alien ship is landing just like in his dream.

in new zealand the ending we saw he goes into his parents bedroom and the aliens are in there making noises which make it clear they are eating his parents - that is why this movie has always freaked me out (i was 6 when it came out and haven't watched it since i was about 9).

i guess some countries didn't want such an unpleasant ending???

That was the U.S. ending too, as that's how it's always ended when I've seen it. I came here to try and understand what the sounds in his parents' room were. Eating, you say?

ll I remember was the ship blows up, then the kid wakes up from a nightmare. He tries to sleep again, the aliens show up for real, he runs to his parents room. I don't recall any noises, but he opens the door and starts screaming like aliens were in there.

Yes, I think this is the closest to what really happened (though I agree with above comment that there were sounds that almost sounded like the parents were being eaten). Sucky non-ending for an entertaining b-movie.

I think it was also the aliens way of saying "Don't bother telling them kid! They're ours now!" The way I figure, he probably ran to get out of the houseafterward to get help and warn people, only to be met be more of the aliens, subduing him, ruining any chances of him warning the world of any danger.

Or he was just having the same bad dream again.

Th final shot of my U.S. torrent version is him in the parents room of his face screaming with lights buzzing. lol I don't think it's the DVD cause the footage is real *beep* like a VHS version and says nothinG about it being DVD.

That was always the ending I knew, since I was a kid.

Just watched it again on Netflix, and I still really enjoy this movie. I've seen the original maybe once or twice as well, but this is what I grew up on. Maybe I was 6 when I first saw it.

I can't exactly explain the ending though. Maybe they shouldn't have had it added in, as it seems other versions end with the explosion. I don't think anyone could say it's a horrible movie if it wasn't for this ending that is unreasonable.

Either it was all a premonition dream, like Final Destination, or somehow the aliens regrouped and came back for revenge. Seems fitting since the first thing they do is eat his parents or whatever. Though it's quite a chore to get him back in his bed, clean up the hill area, repair the parents necks/erase their memories, just to screw the kid over like this. Certainly was a poor ending.

If it was just a nightmare within a nightmare, then the whole film is more or less pointless. A premonition doesn't explain how the aliens got from the landing ship all the way to his parents bedrooms so fast.

It's too bad so many films are ruined in this way where the ending just makes no sense and everything else was at least decently done. It's still a very memorable and fun film for me though. When I was a kid, the ending was perfectly fine, haha.

If he got away, I can only imagine what he'd tell someone during the real invasion. "They ate my parents and now, they're going to eat me. Oh my GOD!" Heh heh.

Nice reference.

Probably just a dream within a dream. That happens in real life...you wake up from a nightmare and think it's over, and then the $hit starts happening again, then you really wake up!

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.
