To this date, has it ever made money?

As of today, 7/14/2013 - has Howard the Duck ever made money, when you consider original box office sales, plus the times it has been shown on tv?

To me, I still love this movie - not wild about the dark overlord stuff, but Howard is cool, and I have to watch the movie again once in a while to try to pick out all the goofs mentioned, most of which I have never noticed -

Well, there has been a DVD release. I doubt they would have released that if it didn't make money.

reply

Uh... they would release it to *try* and make money...

reply

I recently purchased it on DVD, so it's made some money off of me.

reply

I saw it in a theater on original release. So it made money from me as well.

reply

I also paid to see Young Einstein and Mannequin in the theater. Really, I did.

reply

Probably not.

The film is extremely well known, has a loyal cult following, and a recent US blu-ray release stuffed with retrospective interviews. I reckon it's made its money back, and is likely to do even better now that Marvel are returning to the character.

reply

Wouldn't Marvel Studios do Howard justice on film now since he is a Marvel character and how about him in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as one of the stars since his cameo at the end of Guardians?

Budget says 37 mil, Boxofficemojo says it took in 37 mil.

Its been running on HBO for 30 years so maybe.

Pffft, my suspension of disbelief has higher standards than that.

reply

According to Wikipedia, it cost $37million and made $38million dollars at the Box Office. So, it wasn't a massive success, but it made it's money back purely at the Box Office.

reply

wrong, theaters take half or more, but by now it is in profit

reply

It's initial box office run lost somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 million.

Its done well on cable and HBO. It does pop up every now and again on streaming services. The VHS and DVD sales were probably profitable versus their own cost, but were they enough to cover the initial lose?

I think since its been more than 30 years, and its still remembered, and people will either watch it because they love it, or just want to goof on it MST3K style, its finally turned a profit. While it will always be remembered for being a massive bomb, I'm sure the studio likes that it generates revenue now, without them having to put any more money into it.

The comic made decent money to support the movie
