Never understood the hate..

I mean okay, everyone has an opinion. But nothing out there has made me change my mind of how awesome i think this film is.

Not one person has convinced me. I'm trying sooooo hard to be convinced, i just want to see WHY there is no love for this, but i can't.

Maybe i'm strange who knows. But it just seems a lot of critic just jumped on a bandwagon and made up some random hate for this film.

I'm not going to go on forever about how much i think this film rocks because i'd be here all night, but i can't see past that.

Now i love all the greats, Godfather, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction etc.. but still LOVE this.. maybe i'm more open minded about film choice than most of these so called professional critics who write anything it seems and collect the cheques.

Now Mr Lucas.. i've NEVER seen your Star Wars films and most likely never will but you sir, are a hero of mine for this movie alone. I salute you.

People need to lighten up, and go into films knowing at least a little hint at what they're getting into.

I see a duck with a cigar reading the rolling egg.... why would I go into this expecting quality? To me, it did everything I hoped it would. Duck-on-woman romances, man having mental breakdown, Quack-Fu, rock 'n' roll, boobies, it's got it all!

Best part is, it's advertised as a kid's movie with a PG rating, yet no one seems to pay much attention to that, other than the whole "it's a talking duck!" part.

Yes, it's a great comedy…

What you have to remember about this is that George Lucas promised his fans nine Star Wars films back in the early eighties.

However right after he finished Jedi, he decided to go off and make this, along with Labyrinth and others. At the time I wasn't aware of his divorce, and his wife's massive settlement which left Lucas without the money to make another Star Wars film, and many Star Wars fans, along with myself felt betrayed.

As a result I never watched any of the films he made in the eighties after Jedi, (except the Indiana Jones trilogy of course).

So as you can see, it's not just a hatred of the film, it's the fact that many felt let down as a result of it.

Its a polarizing film. Either you love it or you hate it. 28 years later and its still fondly remembered by people whether in a good or a bad way.

I enjoyed the movie, but it just wasn't Howard The Duck.

I have always loved this movie for what it is. As a kid I watched it and enjoyed it, but now as an adult I see that in certain aspects its a lousy film. But you know what, that is what I enjoy about it, that it's just fun! Plain and simple. It's like a good action, funny, idiotic, and silly cartoon come to life. All the more Sylvester Levay created the soundtrack and I'm his fan from Airwolf. I just love this movie, I don't have to think or keep track of anything...it's simply a good, fun time pass. Before I get told for being tasteless, well I do like the better films out there too that are critically acclaimed, but I love those ones just as much where I can sometimes switch off and relax.

I think part of the hate comes from the build-up, and eventual disappointment in the look of Howard on the big screen.

Keep in mind, this was pre-internet '80s...so fans had no exclusive set pics, teasers, or updates on the film to balance their expectations.

All we had back then were those posters, teasing us with the "You will believe a duck can talk." tagline.

With the George Lucas seal attached, the imagination of comic book fans went wild with the possibilities of how state of the art the special effects would be.

Then the film arrived, and it was a guy in a duck suit.

reply

A very impressive ducksuit. You'd be hardpressed to find a better suit in a movie before howard.

Howard the Duck is awesome, I litterally love this movie, and many of the reasons people give for it being bad are many of the reasons I love it.

Like how it feels like it's a family film but goes into some dark and dirty places, starts out as kind of a heartwarming ET type film but then once the dark overlord goes into full on cornball zany sci-fi.
That they don't care if how people see howard, so long as it suits the gag that's happening at the time.
Is he a strange creature? is he a kid in a costume? is he a model? Is he a kid in a costume and at the same time a talking actual duck who is fair game to be cooked and eaten?
It doesn't really matter, what matters is keeping it fun!

Even if you hate Uwe Boll, give Postal a try, be offended or entertained.

Agree. This movie is awesome. Period.

A chick f@*ks a talking duck in this movie. This alone is sufficient basis not to recommend it.

I don't understand the hate either. I love this movie and it's a classic in my family. When it came out, I was 6 years old, but I still enjoy it today. Okay, it's a a cheesy 80s movie with the 80s look (jeans, hairspray, etc.) but it's funny and there is a lot of action and great actors. And I love Howard's personnality. There is a lot of worst movies than this one. I just want to say, and it's my opninion (don't bother to comment), but I prefer Howard compared to, let's say, X-Men: Days of future past.
