Why is this not on blu ray?

I mean seriously, its utterly ridiculous that this isn't on blu ray yet.

Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age.

Hear! Hear! Much more deserving bluray release than the crappy remake!

This is one of my favorite horror movies, and I really wish it'd be released on blu-ray already. The US DVD version is so grainy (especially during the nighttime scenes), so the movie could really benefit from an HD release.

I read somewhere that HBO isn't interested in releasing their older films on blu-ray, so I guess that's the reason for the holdup. It really sucks.

2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the film, so that'd be the perfect chance to release it on blu-ray.

Welcome to Fright Night....for real. 

My guess is that since it flopped at the boxoffice, when it came out 30 years ago and the powerful yet moronic critic Roger Ebert as well as pretty much every other moronic critic back then hated it, it never made much money. Those two reasons combined spells that HBO pictures, which would be HBO Films today, don't think they can make any money on a bluray-release. We can only hope for a restauration made for an HD tv release which could later on lead to a bluray release.

Yeah, The Hitcher flopped at the box office when it first came out, but I don't believe that's the reason for no blu-ray release. It can easily be licensed out to a company who would be willing to put it out (like Shout! Factory, for example). It's probably because of some silly unresolved issue with the rights, which is usually the case as to why it takes so goddamn long for these older horror movies to get released on video disc. But I really do hope it gets a blu-ray release soon. As one poster has already pointed out, the old HBO DVD is grainy (I know, I own it myself), and therefore the picture quality is rather crappy. Not to mention the lack of extras.

If I could have any movie on Blu Ray, it'd be this one. I really wish HBO would do it, but they don't seem interested now that HBO Pictures is disbanded.

Is it possible to happen someday?

reply

I'd buy it! Great creeps in it.

Not on blu-ray and I dont see it ever will :(
Seems to me that it hasnt been aired in HD on any channel worldwide either.

Watching it in HD 1080p on HBO Max here in the US. It’s a nice upgrade, but still grainy at night scenes, and too bad it’s a pan&scan version if you can believe it.

FYI, if you don't mind German cover art, Amazon in Germany seems to have it on blu-ray and its region free. It has some extras, like audio commentary. There's also a more expensive German limited edition, which is locked in region B, so be careful to check the region if you don't have a region free player. Content wise the only difference between regular edition and limited edition seems to be the region lock. Go figure.
