thanks for nothing.

after reading so many positive reviews and seeing the solid imdb review score, i was confident i was making a good decision putting the movie on tonight for some friends. i really wish i'd of watched it beforehand. this movie is terrible. beside the few unintentionally funny parts, there was little to take away from it.

my point is, if you like the movie... great, but please, you will cause severe damage to your relationships if you recommend this movie without a disclaimer.

thanks,
for nothing

I have recomeded this flick to plenty of people and they have enjoyed it...so I guess your theory is wrong?

Still the people I recomended to did not call themselves 'Boner' which speaks volumes.

and my screen name has what to do with the movie?
i am willing to bet that the people you recommended this to didn't have the heart to tell you how horrible it is.

i'm not willing to go back and forth about this. i am just hoping someone on the fence reads my post and runs.

i wasnt replying to you.

c thomas howells performance was ridiculous. Unfortunately for him, it is probably the highlight in his long below average career.

the film seriously lacks any believability.

excluding ryder, the characters were paper thin.

my screen name still has nothing to do with this conversation.

Aw come on boner, 'The Hitcher' is fantastic! Maybe you should try giving it another go sometime. I find it to be timeless!

Call me crazy but I want at least a taste of heaven, before an eternity of hell.

reply

well i will say this, the helicopter/ cop car flip scene had me laughing very hard. also, the filming locations were amazing. howell's whining made the movie unbearable for me though.

also i thought the hitch-hiker episode of twilight zone was more effective in telling a similiar story.

reply

Noone supports you. I will. I can understand your standpoint. This movie makes zero sense.

I enjoyed it when I've seen it in the early nineties, but I can recall I found it a little pointless. I've just watched it again, and now it's even more obvious how ridiculous and unbelieveable is almost everything what happens in the movie.

I still can't say it's not enjoyable. In the eighties, this pointless plot must've been okay. The movie had a unique style at that time, had a strong shock effect, a mysterious villian, and that was enough. It didn't have to make sense. If someone would do a movie like this nowadays, I'd call it pure garbage. But The Hitcher is okay for its time and place in movie history, and I could still enjoy it more-or-less with that in mind.

reply

What does your screen name have to do with the film?
Nothing, and I never said it did.
However...
You choose to call yourself 'Boner' and make inane threads that offer no sensible reasoning...and you don't see a connection?
Which was the point I was highlighting.

As for the people I recomended the film to. As I said, they don't call themselves 'Boner' and that speaks volumes. Thought I already covered this?

If you thought this movie was poor, then DO NOT watch the utter rubbish remake and the even worst so called sequal.
For the record, this movie was deeply missunderstood, and if you didnt get the relationship between hauer and his victim, then thats too bad for you.

reply

watched the remake and i agree it was terrible. at least the original had some amazing locations which gave it a unique feel. i did also enjoy the originals few unintentionally funny scenes.

reply

boner the barbarian is just the name of a dog in the movie "the boys next door".
imagine that, a screen name thats a movie reference on imdb!

should i use my real name like you john?

reply

Oh I'm sorry you had to suffer through the remake. For some reason they always play it on TV and apart from the first time, I can never get through it again. I find it so incredibly boring. I guess that's because there's no Rutger Hauer...

P.S. Head my warning and never watch the sequel.

Call me crazy but I want at least a taste of heaven, before an eternity of hell.

Men! Why must we argue with out boners! Certainly our boners are wrong and will enter into anything regardless of personal taste! Therefore, men, let us cease to argue with our boners and understand that Boners don't enjoy things the same way normal people do. And may I say, Mr. Boner, you may thank us for nothing, but you are welcome for everything.

reply

You are human garbage. Worst review ever.

reply

Nah.

reply

I didn't really think it was that, also i've recommended the movie twice and both people liked but we are fans of cheesey horror movies. I agree about the Twilight Zone episode The Hitchhiker being better (i love that episode). Also the series The Hitchhiker was better but i still like this.

The film's cult status is tied to its era- the mid 80's (which came not long after the disco 70's). I was 20-something in '86 and enjoyed the new look and atmosphere of the film. But I can't expect a different or younger generation to instinctively detect that uniqueness,

Many road "thrillers" of the past 20 years owe much to style of films like the Hitcher. Hollywood deemed it worthy of a remake- and that was not due to any financial success of the first film. It may no longer retain its freshness, but I think it's still a good story with good performances, music, and direction.

reply

^^That's the truth. Its still remains a cult classic and is a very influential film. Rutger Hauer was terryfing and his role carried the film IMO.

Perfectly stated. How many flicks are done almost exactly like this nowadays?

Considering he claims to hate the movie so much the OP has certainly spent a lot of time coming back to the thread for more even after declaring the conversation was over. And then following up over a year later? The movie obviously hit some sort of nerve.
