Rachel mentions that she is very fond of rice--rice pudding, paella, etc.
Her husband also loves rice--Thelma Rice. Was there a joke about this somewhere
in the movie that was cut, or was it just intended to be a subliminal joke?

Hey, I never thought of that. I.E. The rice connection in the movie but it is possible that this was an "in-joke." There could have been a joke about rice (Rachel loving rice pudding and paella vs. Mark loving Thelma Rice) in the movie that was cut. It is a known fact that HEARTBURN was a very troubled production and that Nora Ephron (the writer who based the story on her own failed marriage to Carl Bernstein) constantly had to re-write scenes as filming went along. Hence, there might have been a joke about rice that got cut from the final film.
