Not much to say, I just felt a movie as enjoyable as Heartbreak Ridge should have its own discussion board.

My favourite scene in the movie has to be when Gunny goes to visit AWOL Aponte and when he's handed the baby he treats it like he's holding a loaf of bread, classic.

reply

I agree. I enjoyed Heatrbreak Ridge very much.

My favorite scene was when the marines are planning revenge on Highway by having Swede beat him up. "He's gonna rip his head off!" "And dump down his neck!" "And then make him eat it!"

reply

And then their collective reactions when Highway mops the floor with Swede. LOL

reply

I liked the look on his face when they all came out in the same colored shirt as him. Cracked me up.

heartbreak ridge is a classic marine corps movie...

i liked the scene where the 3 guys trip on the rope when theyre gonna ambush the main marine force. pretty funny. jeje.

oh, and when the rocker guy walks in on teh woman that was taking a shower near the end; he just sorta froze like he had never seen titties before. meaning: was he full of sh!t?

The recurring theme here is that Heartbreak Ridge is not really a very good movie but people like it. I totally agree.

I wrapped up my 4 year stint in 1980, and this movie takes place in 1983. Certainly some of the young maggots in the Corps in 1980 were still on active duty in 1983. I can attest to the fact that the f'-ups portrayed in this movie were very much like what I remember. Didn't really make you proud at the time. Although not everything in the movie was accurate it was certainly more accurate than anything else I've seen on film depicting the Corps. (Maybe The Sands Of Iwo Jima, for example, accurately portrayed the WWII Marines, but I didn't live through it so I can't say so one way or the other. I just think it was very disinfected for audiences because of when it was made.)

Obviously the time frame of Heartbreak Ridge gave me a good reference point since I served from 1976 - 1980. The Corps had some pretty significant problems at the time, and some of them are touched on in this movie. It bothered me to serve with people who didn't care at all to be proud of being a Marine. So to see a professional jarhead like Gunny Highway get these maggots squared away was entertaining and enjoyable.

Anyone notice how Camp Lejeune looked a lot like Camp Pendleton?

Now, my favorite line. At the rifle range, GYSGT Highway tells LCPL Fragatti that he's firing his weapon too rapidly. Fragatti says, "It's not my f'ing fault, man. The f'ing weapon is f'ing f'ed up". Ah, the memories...

This being one of my favorite bits of boot camp (in '95), the Corp's a whole lot better off than it used to be (unless you're in the airwing :)).

I love the part where he gets in an argument with his X-wife and as he's leaving she throws his beer at him. He goes back to pick it up he ends up throwing it back in the end because it was all shaken up but the fact that he went back to get it in the first place was hysterical. A Marine never leaves good beer behind.
Oh and the opening seen at the prison where he's telling a story gets picked on by that big fat guy, kicks his butt, and then continues his story as if nothing happend. Hilarious!
Let's be honest, not oscar caliber but deinitely entertaining.

reply

i like the movie, but it's not ultra-realistic. there are a bunch of errors.

the one that bugs me the most is that Gunny Highway is supposed to be a Medal of Honor recipient and people treat him like he's a joke, especially that Major. in the real world, that just wouldn't happen. the Major and everybody else would've been saluting him and giving him all due respect.

reply

true to some extent, however he was still on active duty therefore, the chain of command still exsists and must be followed.

reply

"The Duke of Funk, The Earl Of Cool, The Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah.... Stitch Jones." Ridiculously brilliant.

"Your girlfriend's gonna weep when I rip that finger off." Who has seen the movie a couple of times and not spouted that line when a mate waves 'the bird' at them?

But on a serious note; I bet I could run faster than Mario Van Peebles. Round corners and everything.

I think some of the lack of respect came from the fact that Highway had an apparent knack for getting drunk and -to paraphrase the judge- starting his own wars whenever there weren't any real wars to fight.

With his excellent combat record and obvious intelligence, he should have been higher in rank than a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7). Apparently his spotty discipline record in peacetime and propensity for tangling with his superiors curtailed his progression through the ranks. Otherwise, he would almost certainly have become a Master Sergeant (or First Sergeant, either way his grade would have been E-8) or even a Sergeant-Major (E-9).

reply

Very true. He should have been at E-9 with his impeccable combat record. It seems though that his combat record is what kept him from getting booted from the Corps whenever he broke the law. It's obvious that such disciplinary problems would keep him from promotions. That being said, for the purpose of this movie, Gunny knickname of Gunnery Seargeant (E-7) sounded so much better.

reply

"Gunny knickname of Gunnery Seargeant (E-7) sounded so much better."

Otherwise he might have had a nick name of...what? Masty or Firsty?

Seriously, I like to watch this movie too. The opening scene where he whips the big guy in prison is great. I also like where they set up the ambush in a different place than expected, and the commander keeps yelling the ambush is in the wrong place. Great!!

my god its full of stars

I know a Marine that was going through Infantry Training School during that time they finished filming at Camp Pendleton. His class go a free copy of the movie. Better than a pay check.

Went through MCT in 2001, apparently the classes right before us had an event where on the final hump went to the top of Smokey and watched Heartbreak Ridge on a projector on top of the mountain, then humped back down and set up for FX.

Woulda been nice to do (or maybe not), but as it is I've seen this movie 10+ times in numerous Marine barracks around the country (and twice in Kuwait).

reply

"Anyone notice how Camp Lejeune looked a lot like Camp Pendleton?"

You are so right! Camp LeJeune is flat, on the coast with lots of woods, but no mountains!!!

At least they got the AT&T calling card bit into the movie... that part REALLY DID happen.

Carry on...
Semper Fi!

reply

I'm pretty sure they filmed all of the basic training parts of Heartbreak Ridge in California. At least that's what is says in the "filming locations" section on the page for this movie.

It looks a lot more like California than North Carolina, anyway.

It has been a while since I watched it but somewhere early on in the movie isn't it mentioned that he has been an E-8 and maybe even E-9 but was busted back to "Gunny"? The line "I've held every grade in the Corps twice" keeps running through my mind.

FYI for all you fok that caught this on AMC...
Sorry to have to correct, you but the term is not " cluster FOOK" (whatever that is)....it is "cluster *beep* corps term which pretty much is speaks for itself.

Many many hilarious scenes.

Ever notice how whenever something VERY obscene was said, there is always a woman close by to give some type of shocked or embarrassed look.

How about after ambushing the 1st platoon in an unexpected location, Highway also throws a smoke grenade into the middle of them to add insult to injury.
