Why did any of those guys join the Marines, did they not know what it was

Ok i know this movie is absurd with all the crap that Highway does as far as shooting live weapons, the way he talks to superiors and his men. All the same the guys act like this is summer camp.

I never understood it. I know it was "peacetime" and the mid-80s, but this wasn't the Army and it wasn't a Stripes kind of movie.

As a kid, I didn't know what Recon Marines were. It's laughable to think any Marines in an all volunteer Corps would act like a bunch of lazy draftees, no matter their sergeant. I get the point of the movie. At that time there weren't many grunts who had seen combat as the Vietnam vets were getting older, a lot retiring and a lot ranking up, so you get inexperienced officers who were more burocrats than marines or soldiers. But I'd think any Marine platoon would have an outwardly decent appearance, even if they weren't up to snuff for some reason.

I don't know. Any vets from that era who can say?

They probably joined the military because they either needed extra income. Didn't know what they wanted to do with their lives. Some cases they hope it will help pay for college.

Also recruiters will lie to men and make it sound better than it really was.

They probably had a relaxed CO before and were not taken seriously. so when the new guy comes in they get a reality check.

I joined the Navy because I was going to graduate high school and couldn't go to college and was not sure what I was going to do with my life. I also thought it would make my father proud of me.
