This is one of Clints funnest and funniest movies and you really cant take it seriously cuz if you did you would notice that none of the guys realize one he walks in an introduces himself don't realize he is a Medal of honor winner they seem to find out later in the movie (they should have notice this right when they meet him ) . And when Stitch Jones is playing in the palace bar his amplifier wire from his guitar is cut ....ha ha ha classic . Sort of reminds us of "the bad news bears" meets "full metal jacket"

LOL! That's when Eastwood is the BEST! This film would have been just another military drama, and God we have enough of those...
Thus film DOES have a "black comedy" feel to it, and that's exactly why I love this film!

Surely if the chain of command (E.G. the CO) isn't going to promote the fact that he is a medal winner, the enlisted men shouldn't be expected to know that he is.

IRL there is no way a CO would treat Highway the way Powers does, but I can suspend disbelief for the purposes of the story, which like you, I feel is quite amusing.🐭
