In the scene where the guy negligently discharges his weapon then Powers punishes the man by making him run circles. I mean this would be the one punishment that powers and him agree on...
The mishap that Profile caused makes for an amusing Hollywood moment but anyone in a responsible position could not have let that moment pass unanswered, including Highway. Although a severe corporal punishment, from what I could tell, that run was meant to be the end of it. Apparently, if Profile had failed to complete the course, Powers would have pushed for a more severe punishment. When Profile stumbled and looked to Highway that he was ready to give up and accept the more severe disciplinary action, Highway told him to get moving so as not to allow the Major to have the satisfaction of meting out an Article 15 or something even more severe.
That's how I always took it. He was telling him to take his licks with his chin up. Plus, it's a bonding thing with his men. Gunnys are a strange breed...they always know their *beep* but they don't act like typical officers. They're salty.
Thanks, your answer makes sense of a scene that has always puzzled me. Nobody should have been angrier than Highway about Profile's negligent discharge
I think it was two parts. One part was that Highway wanted to make his men into the best fighting Marines because he wants them to come back alive if they go into battle. Powers was only interested in making himself look good and didn't care about the soldiers. Other part is Highway didn't like or respect Powers.
In real life, his punishment would have been MUCH more severe than merely running laps around the formation. He practically almost killed about 5 fellow marines.
