phoniest war ever: Grenada

Those students weren't in any danger. It was about kicking the Cubans off the island.

Be sure to tell yourself that you're "in no danger" if you're ever taken hostage, like those medical students were. Maybe it'll keep you from being killed.

They weren't taken hostage. There was a curfew in effect and movement was restricted on the island; but, at no point were hostages taken.

The operation was in response to both the Lebanon Marine barracks bombing and the Cuban presence.

One part that did not get widely reported was that a SEAL team drowned in an advanced recon operation. They were to carry out an advanced recon and infiltrate via a Boston whaler boat, which was carried into position by a helicopter. The boat was dropped in the water and the SEALs then jumped into the water and were supposed to climb in and navigate to shore. However, their combined body and equipment weight overloaded their floatation vests and they drowned before they could get free. They were not wearing breathing gear. The op was a textbook case of overly complex planning. It made more sense to do a lock-out from a submarine or a halo jump to insert the team.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!
