Marines are the ICING on the military cake

Marines curse up a storm. They are TRAINED to KILL. MARINES are the ELITE of all the branches. I believe. My dad was a Marine. I remember growing up as being knowledgeable as a Marine kid. THis movie reflects the Marines as hard chargers. Clint Eastwood's role was DEAD ON!!!! SEMPER FIDELIS!!!!

reply

It's nice that you respect your father but I think you got The Marines confused with the SASR

Anyone who still has faith in humanity has never been to the imdb boards.

reply

UUUUHHH. I RESPECT ALLL BRANCHES OF OUR Department (Army, Navy, AirForce, Marines.) I am a MARINE KID. I AM SEMPER FIDELIS (awlays faithful) To the Marine Corps. TO ME, the Marines ARE THE ELITE of ALL the armed forces.

reply

uh, I echo the first poster who replied to you: nice that you think your dad is great. But how are Marines "elite?" Their only nominally-unique training is in riding amphibious vehicles onto a beach for an assault landing. BUT: 1) When was the last time they did that? 2) Who COULDN'T ride the AAVs onto a beach?

Yeah, as an ex-Army Infantry guy, also Airborne, who are a heck of a lot more assault-deployable (!!), I respect all branches too. But since about 1943, what can the Marines do that any other branch can't ?

reply

Yes,

I was a Paratrooper in the 82 Airborne.

I come from a huge Marine Corps family, and as much as I respect them. They are basically the Army with Ampihibious capabilities......Hate to be the one who break the bad news.

It does not matter what branch they are in. The same Military personnel get sent to the exact same Countries and can be killed by the exact same enemy, firing the exact same weapons.

If someone can give me a better example I am all ears. But as usual. All I will get is "Aren't Ready for Marines Yet."

Just because their Drill Instructors yell more than Army Drill Sergeants is not important. Humping 20 miles with 200 pounds on your back is no different if you are in the Army, Marines, or the cub scouts. I've done it. And if one thinks because you are in the Army it is some how easier..Well, then, they have never experienced it. And they need to turn off the video games.

In Airborne school, we started with 430 students and 3 weeks later we graduated only 200. And some who failed were Marines. Why? It's an Army run school. They should have smoked it and made us all look stupid. But instead the Marines had one distinction while I was there. They had the highest injury rate among the students.

Why? Because a cocky "Elite" attitude does not mix well with Gravity.

The best thing about this movie is the fact that the story was based on a Platoon Sergeant in 2nd Battalion (Ranger) 75th Infantry Regiment. (Later redesignated as 2nd Battalion 75 Ranger Regiment.) The Army, at the time this film was being made, was trying to rehabilitate it's image and felt the story would harm this effort. Additionally the call for fire using a civilian land-line phone and credit card was an actual event performed by an 82D paratrooper.

The Army refused to support the film so Eastwood went with his second choice, the Marines.

I went through jump school at Benning in 1971 with 16 other Marines that had just graduated from CamPen ITR and all of us made it through a course that's mostly composed of a lot of PT. When a Black Hat demanded 50 from us we just shouted "OORAH", dropped and pumped them out in seconds. I seem to recall that when Gen. David Patraeus was in command of the 82nd he could pump out more pushups in a minute than most of his troopers. Doesen't say much for the Army Airborne.

I agree with your other comments, but "Humping 20 miles with 200 pounds on your back"??? Ummm - no. :-)

You're proud of your dad cool. But it's clear you're one of those goons that get into arguments with people saying the Marines are the greatest just because daddy was in it. Try not living on his coat tails. Also, you forget the Coast Guard as part of the military. joe jack

I'm going to open a cross dressing store and name it "Susan B. Anthony"

A lot of people forget that the "Coast Guard" is part of the military. My daughter-in-law is in the Navy as was her husband my youngest. My older son was a Marine. You can imagine the teasing that goes on with the Marine Acronym and the fact that the Marines are actually under the Navy aegis. On the ship she runs along the passageways and will run through packs of Marines when they don't listen to her yelling "Make a hole!" She is 5'2" by the way and knocks them out of the way with little problem. I am proud of all my military family and have had them in all branches including Army/Air Corps later becoming Airforce.

You clueless twit, the five branches of the US Military are ..

-Air Force
-Army
-Cost Guard
-Marine Corps
-Navy

You sound like a prepubescent parrot.

Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.

I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world!

The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat.

Lying offshore, ready to act, the presence of ships and Marines sometimes means much more than just having air power or ship's fire, when it comes to deterring a crisis. And the ships and Marines may not have to do anything but lie offshore. It is hard to lie offshore with a C-141 or C-130 full of airborne troops.
Gen. Colin Powell, U. S. Army
Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff
During Operation Desert Storm

I can't say enough about the two Marine divisions. If I use words like 'brilliant,' it would really be an under description of the absolutely superb job that they did in breaching the so-called 'impenetrable barrier.' It was a classic- absolutely classic- military breaching of a very very tough minefield, barbed wire, fire trenches-type barrier.
Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, U. S. Army
Commander, Operation Desert Storm, February 1991

It does seem that these men (and one woman) above thought very highly when it came to the Marine Corps . And most all were Army generals .

And secondly , why is that almost EVERY person who served in the Army is always Airborne or some Special forces ? I have met VERY FEW former Army who says they were Motor T , Supply , FDC , FOs' , Artillery (Kings of the Battlefield ) , or regular infantry . Most always claim to have been special forces .

I am a (former) Marine , I was a Field Artillery Cannon Crewman and proud of it .

Once a Marine, always a Marine. I'm disappointed that you said former. And I agree about the Army comment. They all claim to be Airborne or specOps. Mostly lies, too bad we can't get them for stolen valor online. Retired Navy here.
