Homo-eroticism, anyone?

It's really homo-erotic. So much so that, before I learned that Eastwood directed it himself, I was dead-certain that it was a sub-versive dig to the "Reagan-era shoot-em-up pro-war" mentality that was pervasive in America at the time. I was convinced that the director or the screenwriter(s) or producer(s) or someone closely involved was gay and wanted to make a gay movie that totally went over the audience's heads. Watch it again sometime.

This movie was very gay indeed.
Take the mud fight scene. Maybe it was macho and cool in the 80's..
I doubt it was, but maybe..

Other than the obvious homosexuality tho, this movie was nothing special.
It was on TV one night and i'm kind of a Clint fan so i thought i'd watch this.
Knowing nothing about the movie before i saw it, i was hoping for a good war movie, but i got the old story of a tough guy getting his last change with a band of misfits.

All the other cliches are there too, like the old army buddy who has to put up with the young n00b officer in charge, who of course hates Clints @ss from day 1.
And there is Swede, the big swedish guy (?) who the young misfits let loose on Clint in an attempt to tame him, but i don't need to tell you Clint whoops his sorry swede butt and slowly, but gosh darn surely starts to gain respect of his troopers.
Not a good movie, but yea sure. Watch it for the gay stuff.
I ended up doing so.. In the first minutes you get a taste of gay jokes too. Can't say they are trying to fool you with this one.
This ain't no Picasso baby.

they just joke like that in the service, it's nothing serious. it really has more to do with the cameraderie built up when a group of troops have to do pushups and other hardships together.
that said, i have noticed a pattern of Clint Eastwood flicks, he likes to surround himself with young pretty boys in his movies; i first noticed it in 'Magnum Force' then look at this flick, but it's all good. Clint is STILL the man.

Not in Recon/ true combat arms installations. Females in uniform are few and far between.

The notion that this film has "mo-like" undertones is not too far off for a person that is not in the military. Men in the military become very close, non-sexual, and to someone that has not been in that type of bonding situation, it may seem very gay.

Another thing that is not talked about is throughout history, many armys, practiced, even accepted homosexual activity as a normal function of the fighting man (i.e. Greeks, Roman, Macadonians).

Couldn't agree more. Some of the closest relationships I've forged in my entire life have been in the past 6 years since I joined the Corps. All with men, and strictly in a non-sexual way.

And the Macedonians actually had an entire unit comprised solely of homosexuals, sworn to fight to the death. They were some of the most feared warriors in history...basically they were the biggest baddest *beep* on the block.

1: This movie wasn't about the Army. It was about the Marine Corps. Get it straight.

2: If you never joined the military, how would you know what it's like?

3: There are PLENTY of women around military installations. . . just gotta watch for the husband-hunters.

4: Somehow, your silly comment about members of the armed forces not having any brains isn't greatly appreciated, and only makes you out to be the idiot you attempted to ridicule. . .

Pencil me in for a heapin' helpin' of it! If guys can enjoy the girl-on-girl scenes in Skinemax movies, we're entitled to a little pec-age and package!

reply

Mind explaining WHY it is so homo-erotic? And don't say "Well it was mostly dudes on-screen doing stuff", no sh_t it was, it's the marine corps. My uncle fought in Vietnam, and he told me that this was one of the most realistic movies about the marines he's ever seen, and one of his favorite movies in general.

Lets remember something, this is the late 80s, not 20 years later. Things were different then. The fact that we have to say that everything is gay is stupid. In no way is this movie gay. Its the military for crying out loud in the 1980s. There were not nearly as many women in the military then as they are now. Yeah there were scenes that may make you think otherwise but in no way is it gay. Its ashame that we have to think of things these days as gay or not when it cleary isnt.

reply

naaaaaaaaah,
i have the destink impression that most homosexuals only look at the things that speak fot their own cause, and tend to forget all the things that speak against their theories....

i think it is so with all filmz: we lay the mening into the films our selves, and we do our own conclusions based on our own valiues...

so if homosexuals think that their is a gay gontent in this film: fine with me. i dont care, i see it totally different.

that has to be one of the most ignorant and homophobic statements ive ever seen on an IMDB board... pathetic.

reply

imo,
"homo-eroticism" is one of those modern day buzz-words and contrived theory (as it is applied to say hollywood movies) that the gay community activists use to promote their agenda of recognition....kinda like the slave reparations to blacks issue.
the problem w/ this kinda stuff is the obviously absurdity of its retroactive application to the past.....i lived in the 80s, and the macho themes in hollywood movies (read top gun) does not equate to "gay." i mean really, the famous painting of the founding fathers in philidelphia have no women in it, does this mean that the constitution is homo-erotic?
looking back and musing on homo-erotic themes in all of tom cruise's movies (for example) from the 80s and 90s is fun to talk about, but signifies nothing in the end except to stoke internet rumors about tom cruise being gay....well that, and as factual support for the national enquirer's headlines!

reply

i must assert that this movie was indeed very, very gay. let's start with the fact that clint eastwood's character is named highway. as in HERSHEY highway.

reply

im sure that we can find gay themes in anything if we try hard enough....
uh, huh, huh, huh....i said "hard." (butthead voice off).

say for example, you screen name: "laughingphiloso4"....
laughing=happiness=gay...so your screen name represents "gay philosopher?"

reply

yes, gay indeed...in every sense of the word

reply

you fruits are all unhappy at your core.

reply

the current trend of thought seems to be;

all men must either show their 'sensitive, female side'
or 'broadcast latent homosexuality'.

so you either act like women or you want to have sex with men.
riiiiight......

reply

1. why does highway like to read women's magazines?

2. why are there repeated references to long, hot showers?

3. why does no one else seem to have a sense of humor?

reply

1- As he stated to his ex. So he could be better for her.

2- Probably because Marines are almost fanatical about cleanliness. Probably because Marines work hard, play hard, and don't like to stink.

3- Because they don't think you're funny?

reply

1. He's "studying the enemy terrain" before conquering his ex-wife.

2. Because almost all heterosexual "challenge" humor between guys is about calling the other guy gay. "You know how I know your're gay? Because you see gayness in everything."

3. Like you? We're laughing our asses off here, princess. At you.

reply

So what do you think of when you eat a Hershey bar or watch a movie with Barbara Hershey?

Most of the guys in this movie were depicted as having wives or girlfriends. Gunny Highway spent an awful lot of screen time chasing after his ex-wife.

reply

The movie might be homo-erotic to you, but not to the people in the movie. That's how the Marine Corps is/was. The bonding is very powerful --- and necessary. Your life, quite literally, depends on the others in your unit, just as theirs depends on you. If you can't fit in and become part of the unit, you're GONE!

Here's an experiment for you (assuming you're male): Pick out a Marine that looks homo-erotic. Ask him for a kiss. hint: pay up your health insurance first.
