Barbara Hershey

I do NOT get her appeal. Her acting was okay, but I thought the casting was strange. Her hair was frizzy and she had no upper lip, yet she's the most beautiful of the sisters?

reply

OMG, I came on here to say the same thing. After seeing this movie a million times I get that she's the young, idealist sister, blah blah. To me, though, just comes across as totally weird and in some scenes very annoying, and look at who she sleeps with in this movie. Ew. And, the clothes and hair of the mid eighties gone terribly, terribly wrong. Seen her in other stuff, she didn't bother me, just this one. Off the subject, but I love Julie Kavner, you know, Marge Simpson, almost wish she was in it a little more.

i remember watching when it orginally came out, and thinking that Hershey was beautiful. now...i don't know what i was thinking, but at the time...def yes.

but then...i [and gfriends] thought william hurt was hot, hot, hot during the time he filmed "broadcast news". now when i watch that film i'm amazed at having those thoughts at one time.

reply

I know your comment is old, but I can't resist adding that I thought William Hurt was hot back then too. On the real subject of Barbara Hershey, I think she could have done with some lipstick in this film, but then 80s lipstick colors might have made things worse!

reply

OMG! William Hurt was such a gorgeous man in the 1980s!!!

reply

The '80s were all about frizzy perms and, even worse, mullet haircuts for women (short and spiky on top, long in the back)! And I'm pretty sure that this movie was filmed before the trend of lip injections ... I thought Barbara Hershey's look was perfectly suited for the role of Lee in 1986. Elliot found her attractive physically, but probably even more important, vulnerable and more needy than Hannah. Lee fulfilled in him a sense of feeling important and maybe just a bit superior to her intellectually. Lee seemed always to be attracted to men who served as teachers or mentors rather than someone who was her equal. Each sister had her own unique appeal, but IMHO Lee was the most attractive. Personally, I thought for someone who was supposed to be a successful actress Hannah came across as kind of frumpy, and Holly's style was kooky.

For me she was always HOT! Check her out in The Entity and Boxcar Bertha

I always laugh when she is referred to as "beautiful" in the movie. She's totally mousy looking and average-looking, atbest. Mia Farrow is the best looking of the sisters and none are remotely beautiful. "Beautiful" is young Ava Gardner or young Liz Taylor, NOT any of these sisters. Wiest also is grotesquesly annoying.

Well we agree to disagree

general - We are in agreement about what a beautiful woman really looks like. There just is no one who has ever been as beautiful as Ava Gardner, although young Elizabeth Taylor comes in at second. Not only is Diane Wiest grotesquely annoying, so is her face.

reply

Frumpy... How is she supposed to look?

reply

Woody Allen told her NOT to wear make-up for this role. She had never made a film without make-up so she was surprised. The physical appearance of her character was what the DIRECTOR envisioned.

reply

Barbara Hershey was beautiful, but messed up her face when she got those awful lip injections. Probably because some silly people said she had a very thin upper lip.

There are so many women in Hollywood who look grotesque because of those damn lip injections. Goldie Hawn, Lisa Rinna, Hershey...

reply

The "lip injections" were used in the movie "Beaches" which was released in 1988. "Hannah" was released in 1986 (TWO YEARS PRIOR) so it has nothing to do with her appearance in Woody Allen's film. Collagen injections are TEMPORARY. The lips go back to normal in a short amount of time. Also, no "silly people" convinced her to do it. She did it on her own which is a testament to how deeply she immerses herself into the characters she portrays.

Lisa Rinna had SILICONE surgery on her lips which is PERMANENT. Huge difference.

Goldie Hawn had her lips plumped for the movie "First Wives Club" in 1996 in which she portrays a middle-aged woman getting revenge on her husband with plastic surgery. She underwent SALINE injections for the film which are also TEMPORARY.

Get your facts straight please.

reply

The eye of the beholder. Ever since I saw her in "Last Summer", she has been high on my list of most beautiful actresses. I thought she was gorgeous in "Hannah and her Sisters".

reply

Yeah, Barbara Hershey was great looking ... I don't know why people who do a good job in a movie have to be picked apart by someone. Even if I thought that, what is the point of going out of one's way to debate it ... the movie is made, done, finito .... live with it, enjoy it for what it is.

reply

Barbara Hershey's acting in this is why I rate the movie one star less than perfect. Otherwise, I love it. She seems so self-conscious and phony, and doesn't relate to the other actors in a natural way.
Of course, she was used to playing sex-pot roles, which may be why he cast her forthe part.

She was/is beautiful, in my opinion, but the style in America during the eighties was pretty funky. When I watch Woody Allen (and other) movies from the seventies and prior, I'm attracted to the styles (i.e. Annie Hall), but the eighties styles are such a mess on some levels. Was it during the eighties that we starting unanimously deciding that France and other certain countries were ahead of us in the style dept?

i'd crawl all the way across the world just to touch the hem of her garment...

American women emulated French styles in the 1940's when so many servicemen returned from Europe after the war.

reply

Oh, i totally loved hershey.

I do think Leigh was the most beautiful sister but the 80s style was not flattering on any of them. Hannah looked the best in a way because she stuck to what suited her. But her straight little bangs and frizzy hair were not so hot either.

I don't think Hannah was the smartest, just sort of the most grounded and giving. Men like that, but then want something different. Elliot was a mentor figure to both Hannah and Leigh, he just needed to come to appreciate Hannah again. And despite being giving, Hannah was also incredibly demanding.

Holly was whacky but ended up being talented and fun enough to hold Mickey's interest.

Whatever, the whole family was weird. But when you consider the mother, the kids turned out okay.

reply

I thought she was a doll and would have thought that was a near-unanimous opinion.

reply

Funny enough I mistook her as Sigourney Weaver initially.

I thought she was a bit one dimensional in her part.
