Successful?

was this movie successful?

That depends on what your definition of "successful" is, since it's all relative.

Did it take in $200 million at the box office? No.

$100 million? No.

It grossed $36 million in the US, in 1986 movie-going dollars.

However, taken in the context of 1986, it did pretty well, considering it cost only $10 million or so to make, and the price of a movie ticket back then was just 4 or 5 dollars, compared to 8 or 10 dollars today.

It wasn't in the class of the Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones trilogy, or other "blockbuster" summer movies of the time in terms of generating megabucks.

Nevertheless, it grossed about 3 times what it cost to make, so, in most accounting circles, that's considered a decent success.

I also remember it getting a lot of rentals on VHS tape at the Blockbuster Video type movie rental stores that were all over the place in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

There was also a short TV sitcom spun off from the movie soon afterwards, but it lasted barely half a season, since almost none of the people from the movie were in the TV show.

I don't remember it being a big hit. However, since they made a short lived TV series out of it, I guess it did well enough, just not the big blockbuster of the year.
