Eddie Murphy: The action star

I thought he was kinda kick ass in this movie when he played it straight. Maybe he should have tried more roles that involved that kind of acting.

"Acting" is the keyword here....

Beginning with "Coming to America" he more or less stopped acting and started hiding behind makeup + prosthetics, and playing most (if not all) of the parts himself....

The only exception to this IMHO is The Distinguished Gentleman (1992)....

RIP Ian....

Playing roles wearing makeup and prosthetics IS a traditional part of acting.

Are you kidding? Boomerang is a great adult movie. But since it's an all-black cast, it never gets any due. Amazing how that happens. Eddie was good as a lead in that movie, deserved the Academy Award as Jimmy Early in Dreamgirls, and was surprisingly good in Life. He's made more than his fair of bombs, but the guy is still Eddie Murphy.

reply

Agree with you about the under-rated 'Boomerang' which showed Eddie's range as an actor but I do have to admit that over his career he has been somewhat lazy in his roles. He should have done a straight drama years before 'Dreamgirls' because it's evident in movies like 'The Nutty Professor' and 'Life' that he is a tremendous talent. Sadly, though too often he's been content to play the clown and since he's getting into his 50's now I doubt he'll be changing anytime soon.

Waste.

'Cause I'm Black you think I did it?

He was. - He was kick-ass in 48hrs, Another 48hrs, BHC, BHC II, and Metro which is an underrated action flick.

The only change I see in Eddie is that he's more toned down now. - His movies are no longer just for Adults.

Nah, metro was terrible. Eddie basically gave up on trying when Harlem nights got trashed, after that it was pretty much all about maleing money. in a way I dont blame him, he's proved everything and has everything he needs

"...I'm a contradiction"

reply

Explain. - what was terrible about Metro?

cheaply made, cheesy plot, complete lack of character development, just bad. Not to mention its basically all his good action movies with the humour taken out. Its a bad channel 5 B movie I'm afraid. lacking originality and spark. cant do better than that I havent seen it in ages, but I was massively disappointed.

reply

Thanks for you opinion. - I just hate when someone says "It's bad" with no description as to why they think it's bad.

So....So you think 48hrs wouldn't have been good without the comedy?

reply

imo not as good. Eddie is more than just humour but he hasnt really found vehicles to showcase this. other than Boomerang where HE isnt that funny, Dreamgirls and Metro

IMO - The action is what carried 48hrs. - There was no action movie like it before it and still one of the grimmiest "buddy cop" movies to date (and we use the term BUDDY very lightly in this case)

The Golden Child strikes me as one of those movies that really didn’t have a script (they just put all of their energies in the concept and special effects) once Eddie Murphy came on board, so they just told him to ad-lib as much as possible. It just that only Eddie’s character appeared to be in on the joke. Therefore, if the main character isn’t going to take things seriously, despite a very scary villain played by Charles Dance being in the way, why should we as an audience take things seriously (it was a very uneven movie)? I think that had it not been the very first movie that Eddie released after the smash hit that was the first Beverly Hills Cop movie, then maybe test audiences wouldn’t have been so demanding that Eddie’s character be like Axel Foley. In a way, The Golden Child is BHC meets Big Trouble in Little China (which incidentally, came out the same year and also features James Hong and Victor Wong) if you ask me.

well said. that is pretty much exactly how it turned out.
