Made Me Appreciate My Personal Bible

I am not a deeply religious man, but I have read the whole Bible once through and continue to re-read it on occasion. Watching this movie has made me appreciate the fact that I can even read a Bible. It's hard to wrap my mind around the fact that there were was a time when no one could read or even find a copy of the Bible in their own language and one had to go to a Catholic church and depend on the interpretation of a Latin version from a very biased priest. I'll remember this film when I go through those periods of neglecting my Bible study.

I saw this film some years back on Channel four. I was deeply impressed with Tydale for he thought out things for himself rather then follow the masses of the catholic church. Someone who stood out and try to teach the bible to those who did not understand latin. Now all religious groups can read the bible in what ever lauguage they wish to read in.

I am not religious but to those who follow like sheep when religion is just man-made should not accept the authorite of any church. Just read the bible as it is !

Yeah, I'm a non-practicing Catholic, but find the use of religion to control thought and behavior somewhat repugnant. And, I agree, the Bible has solutions to any problem anyone can find in this life, it's an amazing collection of books, if consulted without biased opinions.

I am not religious at all. I respected William Tydale because he made people think. It wasn't just the Church Authorite which controlled the masses, it was that science was on the eve of exicting discoveries and the Church held them back. With Tydale,Crammer, fisher and all those who went to their deaths because of differing points of view...it made a stand with the Church so that Mankind can progress. The Bible is good to read if left to a person to work out for themselves what the meaning is. Even today there are religious groups who, for reasons of their own agenda, stir up alot of lies with regards to Bible teachings. I am thinking of the "God hates Fags" mob and "Creationist Movements". I just wish those people did not try to convert others to believe in such nonsense. Rant over thank you for reading this.

Anyone who could read Latin had access to their own personal Bibles (most of the upper class of the period), and there WERE some translations in English at this time, but they were costly to produce before the invention of the printing press. The Church primarily opposed translations of scripture that were not "legal" and taken through the usual channels, because they could not "check the text for errors." That Tyndale wrote a prologue to the New Testament heavily biased against the Catholic Church and pro-Reformation / Luther that was published with his New Testaments did him no favors in the eyes of the authorities.
