After seeing this. It's funny, filthy, creative, and visually lasting. Like Society, it doesn't pull punches on its depravity... which is definitely there. I swear Steward Gordan and Brian Yuzina probably watched porn together.
shareI used to watch this a lot back when it used to come on television during the early 1990s, but I had forgotten about it.
The cross-dimensional rift always stuck with me, and then I started thinking about it more and more but couldn't remember the name. I eventually happened upon it again after watching more of Brian Yuzna and Stuart Gordon's stuff -- in particular Return of the Living Dead 3, which led me to The Necronomicon, which led me to some other Brian Yuzna stuff and then finally back to From Beyond!
Ha, oh boy was I not ready for From Beyond again. This movie really was crazy, and had some amazing and disturbing effects for its time (many of them still hold up, too).
But you're right, this movie was depraved, out there, but also was completely honest about what it was and how it ended. They really don't make movies like this anymore without devolving into the whole torture-porn nonsense, which is quite a shame.
I love how over the top the movie can be as well as disturbing. In one scene, you got a chase scene with the neighbor lady in an awesome shot down the staircase. The next, you have brainsucking through an eye hole in a sterile hospital room. You could be turned on by Barbara Crampton getting into the leather outfit and be disturbed by a video playing of Pretorious whipping a woman mercilessly.
That doesn't even deal with the goopy nature of the next dimension. Now that's about as appealing as licking worms.
