I did not get the ending???

What was going on there? I realize I saw the movie a long time ago, but, why did she kill her baby? She explained something afterwards that it was 'cause she did not want to be like that old lady who told stories, but what's that got to do w/ it? Someone please explain, thanks!

I believe she thought she would never get ahead in life once she became a teen mom. She did not want to end up like the other people she saw in her community; she wanted more. I think it was more like manslaughter than anything else.
She kind of went into shock thinking about how her life was going to turn out and suddenly thought of an "easy" solution - just let go of the baby. I think it was an "in the moment" kind of decision that would haunt her later on because you can still become successful even if you start out as a teenaged mom and I think she probably ended up always carrying that guilt of having killed her child. It was a life foreclosed; the child did not even get a name. It was as if she felt the baby had to sacrifice her life so she, the mother, could live her own. Kind of backwards and selfish, honestly.

Weird. The movie was good, 'til that "TV Docudrama of the Week" ending.

wordartist, I don't agree. That baby was to be adopted out, immediately. She (the baby) wouldn't have held back Trilby. Trilby did what she did, for another reason.

The song they played and sang about their brown skinned babies being taken away, may have been why.

If she kept it, would that baby ever have any sort of good future.
She was not in her right mind to my way of thinking, it was her way of setting her browned skinned baby free.
