If released today...

I think Jeff Goldblum would have a chance at an Academy Award nomination.

(Also Michelle Pfeiffer for Batman Returns)

I mean if Johnny Depp was nominated for the first Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Heath Ledger won supporting actor for The Dark Knight.

The Academy has changed and is not looking for those Kramer VS Krames-like roles.

I also believe that the rating would be higher than a 7.5... it should be!

Yeah, there's certainly a bit less genre bias within the Academy these days than there was 30 years ago. I think a lot of it has to do with Gen-Xers who grew up with the Hollywood landscape created by Star Wars now occupying a larger chunk of the voting block, and that will continue as subsequent generations follow.

Goldblum and Pfeiffer faced the same bias films like Star Wars, E.T. and others did. When Return of the King won Best Picture, it signaled a shift in that mindset, however slight.

Goldblum certainly deserved a nomination. Its almost a "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" sort of performance. As fantastic as the concept it, he evokes some very real human struggles with aging, mental illness, STDs, terminal illnesses, and even drug addiction. Some said the film was a metaphor for the AIDs epidemic at the time. I think Goldblum said that the key to his performance was that the character's transformation was physically painful and he tried to express that. (To say nothing of psychologically painful) Not only that, but many actors say its quite difficult to act in makeup prosthetics!

Funny, I re-watched The Fly last night and Batman Returns today and thought Michelle Pfeiffer was incredible – something I really wouldn't have noticed when watching it as a kid in the 90s.
