what movie was it?

Does anyone remember an 80's movie where a kid gets telepathically contacted by an alien, and the alien psychically instructs him how to build a space ship. So he gets all these household parts and builds a spaceship and flies off to meet the aliens who are in orbit.

Trying to remember what movie that was, any clues? My memory of it is a bit fuzzy, but it kind of reminded me of a cross between FOTN and Radio Flyer.
