I'm trying to find the title of a film from possibly the late-70s but more likely the 80s. An alien has found its way to earth and goes about a small town rather guardedly, dropping in on a few people in the night time and interacting peacefully with them. The alien plays checkers or chess with one fellow. Finally, he makes an appearance during the daytime in front of the whole town and a local yokel fires a shotgun at the alien and kills him.

Yeah, extensive research lead me to this title earlier and it is indeed THE AURORA ENCOUNTER. Thanks, though. You must've blocked the alien being killed at the end... or I inserted it. If that's the case, I must be sick. Or I'm getting two movies mixed up.
shareI saw the movie once, but this was a long time ago. I barely remember much, especially the ending. I felt the film was too family friendly for the alien to suddenly get shot and killed.

It does in fact happen. That's what kinda stuck out to me about the film, seems family-oriented but then they kill the alien in the end. What if that had happened in E.T.?
