My biggest question - a parade?

Why was there a major parade in the city of Chicago, on a school day? Wouldn't municipalities have parades when schools and businesses are closed?

Googled it. It was supposed to be The Von Steuben Day parade celebrating German culture. Except, according to Wikipedia:

The Chicago version of the parade was incorporated into the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, even though the movie's plot indicates that Ferris is taking advantage of his "ninth sick day" of the school semester, and other movie details indicate the day takes place near the end of the school year, not in September, and not on a Saturday.

The city has all the parades on the weekends now but back in the '80's the parades were on the actual holiday no matter if it was a weekday or not.
