Burt Reynolds broke the 4th wall in Smokey & The Bandit (1977)

"Young Frankenstein" did it before in 1974. Not sure if it was first. Maybe "Blazing Saddles."

And Alfie did it before in 1966.

Come to think of it, after I thought more about it, Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Bros and George Burns all broke the fourth wall decades before Ferris did.

Watch some of the Bing Crosby/Bob Hope Road movies from the 1940's, and '50's. They constantly break the 4th wall.

Ginger Rogers broke the 4th wall, in her movie Forever Female (1953), when she is talking about the 29 year olds in the Audience. She looks at the Camera... TWICE.

I always thought the breaking of the 4th wall was done by Oliver Hardy way back when. No-one has ever done it better.
