sharethe original question was a fair one.many movies are not released directly to theaters ,even back in 1986.this person being only a 1yr old at the time wouldn't have known this. "of course it was" was an inappropriate response. just a tad "harsh".
shareI appreciate all of the information there is on this website, but even though there is a "release dates" page and a "box office/business" page, the original poster makes a good, if perhaps unintentional, point about this site. I was unable to find on IMDb a film's specification, whether as a theatrical release, TV movie, straight-to-DVD, etc. I wonder sometimes myself so then I go to Wikipedia and the answer is usually there.

I was 20 in '86.
Burning Bed had come out in '84. I think she did Extremities on stage first, which led to Burning Bed.
Nothing came of Extremities, for whatever reason. I would see this later on tv. I think I do remember adverts in the paper, but I'm not sure if that was just tv promos when it aired on tv. I never saw theatre adverts on tv for this.
She then followed up with Small Sacrifices, also on tv.
Extremities and Small Sacrifices, and maybe Burning Bed aired, probably when she passed away, but that was a bit much to watch one right after the other.
