Translation

There were long and protracted scenes with the girl speaking to her family and friends in what sounded like Spainish (or Ladino) and yet the film I saw had no subtitles. It would have been nice to know what they were talking about....anyone see a version with subtitles.???

reply

Watching it on the THIS channel, and it's got subtitles. Never heard of this flick, but I like it already--refreshingly nice and not-so-simple love story.

Yes, they were speaking Ladino (Judezmo). The version I saw had subtitles for that. It was also prefaced by a 'dictionary style' definition of Sephardim (Sephardic Jews). I've always wondered if that was done for only certain target audiences. Maybe you saw a version that was released in Europe/Spain/Israel and didn't require translation. If you have any friends whose native language is Spanish, they should be able to understand 90% of that dialogue.

BTW, I can't offer to help translate because about half the movie was in Ladino, so there's too much dialog to do after the fact & I certainly can't recall from memory either.
