Odd title. Why does girl decide to marry the cousin?

The lovers don't say good-bye that much, and it's not always the same. "Every Time We Say Good-bye" is a nice song in its own right -- so why the totally irrelevant "Berkeley Square"?

Hanks and the actress playing his girlfriend have no chemistry togther on-screen.

My guess is that the girl believes she is pregnant and doesn't want to face her vicious mother as a single mother'

Did you watch the same movie?

She decided to marry the cousin because for her, to marry a non-Jew (a son of a Christian pastor at that), was just totally impossible and not going to work out. She is a Sephardic Jew (read the notes at the beginning of the movie). I guess her family and religion are both so strict, particularly in the 40's that to marry outside your religion is totally out of the question. She knows her family would have to disown her and Tom Hanks still had to go away to war, I guess she just thought it was just too much trouble even though she really loves Tom Hanks. She was just going to marry her cousin out of obligation to her family. No, she was not pregnant.

I actually thought it was very obvious why.

She is totally in love with Tom Hank's character, and she knows her heart is going to be broken because he is never going to stay there forever, so from the very first moment she starts to fall for him she instantly starts purposely trying to distance herself, she tried to shun all his initial attempts to speak to her, and even after they got together she asked him to never ever come back again when he left for war. She asked him to never come back and to never write.

Its all because she is afraid of being hurt in the end. The fact that he is not the correct religion is just an additional problem.

So then they have their final night together, and he has to leave for war. She instantly runs to the guy who loved her all along, she wants to forget all about it and immerse herself in a stable relationship where she will make herself forget Hank's and make herself live in a 'safe' 'secure' marriage.

Of course, she eventually realises she is only fooling herself by doing this and marrying him...

Do you usually go around movie boards writing spoilers in the title of the thread, or is it just this one?

She wasn't pregnant. She just wanted to placate her bigoted family.

She gave her reasons- because he loved her, and he was such a good man. But I think she was afraid to commit to the Yank, and was using the cousin as a hiding place. She feared losing her family. She feared becoming her own woman. Thankfully, Papa set her straight, gave her the courage she needed.
