Fantastic movie.
Didn't know The Barbarian Invasions was a sequel to the film; I definitely have to check it out, but so far this is the best Canadian film I have seen to date. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean a lot since I find a ton of Canadian films painfully mediocre (particularly English ones), but this one really was incredibly entertaining, witty, funny, and thought provoking. The most interesting aspect of the film is how deplorable the vast majority of the characters actually are, but we appreciate the film itself so much simply because of all these character interactions.
I must also mention that aesthetically and technically speaking this film has really held its ground. The version of the film I saw was the 2004 Seville DVD, and the picture quality was fantastic. Colors were particularly natural, the detail was great and even the static landscape shots at dusk showed no visible artifacting or banding. The 5.1 audio mix was very rudimentary, however for a film that was just dialogue and made in 1986 I couldn't imagine it being any better. That's just the nerd in me.
All in all, a solid 8.5/10 for me. An excellent film.
