i have just watched the barbarian invasions..is it also that good?

i have just watched the barbarian invasions and i saw the trailer o fthis movie ..it seems like a nice little comedy dealing with men and sex. which other movies by the director denys arcand would you recommend?

reply

Avoid Love and human remains and Stardom. Jesus of Montreal is good.

reply

Decline is pretty good...don't know if youve seen it yet. But Barbarian Invasions is sort of a sequel to Decline, so you probably should have switched the order around lol. And Jesus of Montreal is definitely one of Arcand's best.

reply

yeah . but its not really a sequel in the sense that they ar etwo independent movies..as for jesus of montrea i havent seen it yet but i plan to as i like the plot and have herad goo dthings about it . thanks for replying.

reply

Wow. You watched in the wrong order. Both movies rock, but respect the sequence.

reply

well..id idnt care much for the sequence..

I'd be very interested to hear the opinion of someone who saw this one after the other...

I saw ""Declin" after "Les Invasions." There's no contest. The second movie, made in 2003, is much better than the first movie, made in--198--? But: you have to learn to walk before you learn to fly! Wasn't "Declin" his first movie? It is very talky, but the talk is good---but, it's still very talky. And most of the talk illustrates an idea, not a personality. However, since Les Invasions Barbares is probably my favorite movie of all time, that doesn't make the other one bad! It was such fun seeing what they were all like 20 years ago.

I like how you explain it. The second is much better than the first, but you have to learn to walk before you learn to fly. I fact when I think at both movies, that's exactly what I felt (but I've learnt to walk before) I wondered if that could be the same in the other order...

reply

Not sure I understand 'the same in the other order."

Sorry, I meant I wondered if someone could have the same feeling with watching the movies in the other order...

I doubt it, although "declin" certainly has it's mments! The men dancing around, fabricating the kind of small talk necessary to getting sex, Claude shaping the dough, Dominique's life-stopper at the end of the film, Louise's inncence...it's a great little film!

In fact--I think I'll watch it! (Anything to keep from studying!)

I first watched Decline in the early 1990s and it completely blew me away then. Whenever it comes on TV, I usually watch it and it still blows me away. Barbarian Invasions is another outstanding film and I probably need to watch that more than the one time that I have but I still, for now at least, have to give the edge to Decline as the better film. Both are wonderful though.

I saw this one after Invasions... I have to say I had a lot of expectations, as I liked Invasions and had heard this one was much better... I have to say I was bitterly dissapointed... I mean, without being a bad movie, is doesn't get to really touch me, not intellectually nor emotionally... although there are several interesting subjects, the exposition is rather unsubtle, (in Invasions the exposition is much more contained and elegant) in this one there are moments where it feels just like intelectual masturbation. The first hour of the sex talk was kind of boring (maybe for 1986 it was quite a novelty?, but these days it feels a little bit void)... I enjoyed much more the second half, but when it was finally beginning to capture my interest it finished. :-(

Nevetheless there are some good moments, as when the guys dance and make fun of the typical lines of conquest; I loved the scene where Danielle? masturbates Alain while talking about millenarianism

reply

The whole point of the film was "intellectual masturbation" and how these allegedly brilliant academics discuss nothing but sex.

Anyways, I would say that after watching his three great films (Declin, Jesus, and Invasions) you should definitely watch Stardom. It is easily the most unappreciate of all his films and is (apart from Jesus) his most cinematically sophisticated film.

reply

Le Declin is actually much better than Les Invasions. Witty, funny, well paced. Les Invasions is good, but somewhat emotionally manipulative.

reply

It's not the same kind of film. For me, it is better for a strage reason. It is a 'talky' movie, and i hate talky films...exepet, this one and a few others.

Expect Nothing, saw it for yourself. You may have a great time.
