What was it all about?

I love the film. The contrast between the tough-guy Americans Jack and Zack and the comedic/romantic Roberto. In the end, only Roberto has made a life for himself and he does this through the love of a woman who takes him in. Meanwhile Jack and Zack have been destroyed by women in different ways. Jack as a pimp tried to own them, Zack seemed to end up with one who needed him to supporter her yet he couldn't do it to her satisfaction.

So is it all about finding the right woman? And in order to do this you have to take a whimsical approach to life?

That's my take.

Life is for lovers, and lovers are for life.

If you watch enough Jim Jarmusch films, you'll note that he doesn't necessarily wrap up things at the end of the film, though usually still an interesting milestone in the narrative. This story ends when they part ways, but it's not the end of their lives.

There's something in what you what you say though. Roberto blunders into a nice place by chance because it's more likely given his outlook on life. And boy is that ever Benigni's lot in life to be playing characters like that--as much as I don't like his overacting in some other films, his part in this one is spot on.

And at the fork in the road, Jack and Zack go their separate ways, but their outlook is so much similar that doesn't matter which goes right and which goes left--their both cemented in their ways. It doesn't have anything to do with having a right or wrong woman though.

Sorry. Couldn't disagree more.

Life is for lovers, and lovers are for life.

I agree with your statement about the roads. I thought Jack/Zack could have been the same person. Nothing about either characters' situation was unique. Both had been set up. Both received severe tongue lashings from women. Both had unrealistic views of the world and it landed them in prison. They are both saved by the most unlikely killer.
