Super film and Bette Midler is a marvellous but underused talent.

reply

This movie is hilarious, I've probably seen it 10 times.
Deserves at least a 7.

reply

it's hilarious indeed,
like all the best Dreyfuss-movies (What About Bob)

and Elizabeth Pena is also beautiful=)

How can you say Midler isn't good in Ruthless People?

reply

I'm watching this movie for the first time, and I find it very blah. The acting is excellent, the story seems weak. If it's supposed to be a comedy I haven't laughed once. If it's supposed to be a drama I find the whole thing non-compelling. If you think the dog stole this movie then that says it all imho. There was no movie to steal. What could have been descended into farce. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone in the modern era.

I found the movie serviceable as a comedy, but I was disturbed by it, too. That the homeless man had sex with his host's wife, housemaid, AND DAUGHTER, and that he was a casual liar all left me with a very negative impression of Jerry. At the movie's end I didn't see that the family was truly better off for letting him into their midst: they all had become addicted to him!

reply

Yes, I agree that it is under-rated. I haven't seen it in years, but I remembering enjoying it immensely. I also don't know why people say it is pointless, I think it does a great job of satirizing our modern throw-away society.
The acting is suberb. I gave it a 7!

Definitely! This movie is underrated on this site. Check Rottentomatoes.com and they have it somewhere around 93% and Roger Ebert raves it is one of the best movies of 1986. I don't understand how some people vote on this site. Oh well... It deserves a good 7/10.

This is a pretty good movie. It has a brief, but super hot sex scene. I don't think we needed to see Dreyfuss shirtless, but the maid riding him and the way she was talking was really hot to me.

I absolutely love this movie and it is a part of my permanent video collection. Nick Nolte gives one of his best performances(he is heartbreaking in that scene where is looking for his dog at the outdoor restaurant and people are looking at him like he's a freak) and Midler and Dreyfuss have rarely been seen to better advantage. I found this movie a lot of fun.

always have LOVED this movie. The 80s was my era and I certainly miss a lot that came out of that time. This movie always brings me back to a happier simpler time where the movies and music was a big part of my life.

The scene where Nick Nolte gives Bette Midler a massage IMO is a classic. lol

reply

If you were to pick five movies that represented what the '80s were all about, this should be one of them.

reply

I agree! It stands the test of time. It's as enjoyable now as it was when it first came out. And then there's the dog, Matisse..........

reply

Matisse was played by a dog named Mike, and almost all of the reviews on this film upon release mentioned that Mike stole the movie.

reply

I agree. The film has aged extremely well, and it has a sharp and bitter brand of humour rarely seen in mainstream comedies.

I agree.

And thanks for posting this- as I was just about to, when I saw your thread.

I think it's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen- the ensemble cast, script, and direction was top notch. Probably Nick Nolte at his best- doing, of all things comedy! Too bad other directors didn't take notice and use him in a likewise fashion afterwards.

Very funny film!
