What did you get from this? (spoilers)

The movie started out with great promise for me, and I was excited b/c I really like all the lead actors. But by the time the film was over, I was greatly disappointed....it wasn't particularly funny and the story itself really offered nothing for me to take away from it. Nolte was an interesting character, but quite frankly he was an ungrateful greedy jerk. Dreyfus did everything he could to help this guy from taking him in to offering him work and in return all he got was screwed over. It just makes me wonder what the point of this was? I thought it was a bummer of a movie and I ended up feeling sorry for Dreyfus, not Nolte by the end of it...
