Watching now

I never even knew this movie existed. I'm watching it now on one of those "classic stations." I came in part way through and I like it so far. The thing is, I know people from the desert southwest that lived through the bomb testing and they and their children having to suffer from dibilitating diseases and cancer. Many men at the tail end of the baby boomers cannnot father children. They were the unborn at the time of the tests. Many of their siblings were born with their ribs or organs outside of their bodies. I like that I can watch a dramatization of what life must have been like for the people of that era in the Las Vegas area.

I went to see it 3 times when it was in the theaters. I've seen approximately 5000 films and I've always considered it to be one of the most underrated films I've seen. It had a wonderful debut performance by Annabeth Gish and other than possibly his performance in ' Midnight Cowboy ', I feel that this was Jon Voight's best work. A wonderful film that I rate a solid ' 8 ' out of 10. I hope that you enjoyed it at least half as much as I did.

I enjoyed as much as I saw. I hope to see the entire movie someday.

Did you ever get to see the complete film? If so, what's the verdict?

I found the DvD and purchased it. I really love this movie; the story, the narration, the pace. I teach just outside of Vegas and know people affected by these tests. It's good to know the dramatized history of the bomb tests and what life must have been like back then.

Glad you finally saw the complete film. Most people feel that Voight's performance in ' Midnight Cowboy ' or perhaps, his performance in ' Coming Home ' might have been his best. I would say that his ' Jack Chismore ' in Desert Bloom, was at least as good as either of those.

Ponder this: Why the heck did Mrs. Howell bring so many clothes, if it was only a 3 hour cruise?

Yes, a great performance. I liked him in "The Champ" also. :)

He's also good in ' Conrack ', a very nice film from 1974, based on an autobiographical book by Pat Conroy. You can watch a very decent ( resolution ) upload of the film on YouTube. Enter ' Conrack good upload ' in the search window, to make sure that you get the higher resolution upload. It's in four parts. If you watch it, let me know what you think.
