Final scene

I loved that final scene when the mushroom cloud rises and the little girl says "it's beautiful."
I really love this movie, I think Jon Voight's portrayal of the stepfather was one of his best performances .
This movie has definitely been underrated.

I went to see it three or four times when it was in the theaters. I feel that Voight's performance in it is up there with his performance in ' Midnight Cowboy ', or at least very close. The film still holds up very well for me, almost thirty years later.

I agree, its one of Voight's best. Everyone excelled in their roles and whoever did the costuming was right on for the period. The scenes were also like looking at a time capsule of the 50's. I grew up in the 50's and even though I was a young child, I rememeber the adults always talking about "The Bomb" wondering if they should put a bomb shelter in their back yards, the "Duck and Cover" exercises in grade school, etc.
I have the DVD and watch it a least once a year, I'm never bored by it and each time I watch it, I find some little thing I missed in previous viewings.
