Are Paul and Sam just friends or are they boyfriend/girlfriend?

I like this movie. I watched it years ago and I don't remember whether they are officially boyfriend and girlfriend or just special friends. But I know Paul love Sam.

I think they would've been boyfriend and girlfriend eventually had Sam not died, but as it stands they were just close friends.
