A man turns into a tow truck

Anyone read the Peter Carey short story the movie is based on? The movie is a pretty literal translation, although with a completely different ending ... the ending in the story (Crabs turns into a tow truck and drives away, only to get lonely, return and find himself locked out of the drive-in) would probably have been hard to recreate in the movie on a low budget. But as a result of the changed ending the whole subtext of the story is missed. What does everyone else think of the adaptation?
