Wasn't it amazing without the aid of CGI? how did they do that?

Looks like they just melted a wax head with various layers and then reversed it. You can see the drips going upwards. They did this in Raiders of the lost ark just not in reverse

They had to make it physically, so it was actually done on screen and not in a computer. So that helps. Between that effect, the exploding house, the rebuilding house, and the Critters themselves it's hard to believe it only cost 2 million to make.

The only thing even better was in part 2, with the hottest transformation ever being on Lee.
