I can't believe I am the first poster for this film...

Crimes of the Heart has a special place in MY heart. The relationships the sisters have with each other, the lemonade, the box of candy with a bite out of each piece, the chandelier clanking down the steps, Mama hanging the cat along with herself, the SHRUNKEN OVARY! If you get a chance to see it, do so.

Red,
It's so nice to see that someone else saw the magic in this film. I love it despite (or maybe even because of) its weaknesses -- in much the same way I love my sisters, warts and all.
I've often wondered if the fact that I have three sisters has any bearing on my identification with the characters. A friend, who also loves the film, also has three sisters, so perhaps the intimate knowledge of what that dynamic is about plays into whether someone "gets" this film or not?
Yes, Babe's realization about mama and "that old yellow cat" is the payoff for the whole journey, IMO.
The flashback of the three little girls sitting on the bed, all dressed up for their mother's funeral and wearing black patent leather shoes, almost feels like my own memory. It's like watching an old 8mm movie of my sisters and I at Easter....
Hmmm, I haven't seen it for a while now. I think I'm going to order the DVD!

I loved it too - I come from a family of 3 sisters and I thought it was just hilarious - just like them we are all soooo very different from each other ...when Sissy's character hit her head on the oven top and then just casually reached up and starts eating hte popcorn - ...well the tears were streaming down my face - I thought that was so funny - I really enjoyed this show...

This move has a special place in MY heart, too! This is one of my favorites. I had it on VCR format, but just ordered the DVD last week. I use lines from this movie in my everyday life. Whenever I'm in a stressful situation and around someone who knows me, I always ask, "Would you like a coke?" LOL. Plus, I'm from the south, too, where all soft drinks are called cokes.

And "Why'd momma' have to kill herself? And took that poor old cat with her."

"I guess she was havin' a bad day, just havin' a real bad day." ROFL

And Sissy Spacek in the oven, then reaching up for popcorn while waiting! LMAO.....then hitting her head when she changed her mind. gosh...just loved this, always will.

"I came on home to see 'bout Babe."

"I'm free, I'm freeee!!!"

"Why'd you shoot him, Babe?"
"Well, maybe I just didn't like his looks, I just didn't like his stinkin' looks."

love it....watching it now, again...still.

I love the way they would all say 'Baaaabe!!!' With that deep Southern twang.

'Wearin' the lime green gloves of a dead woman'

That sad little way Lennie would sing Happy Birthday to herself and would constantly get interrupted..'Happy Birthday to meeee'...

I also loved it when Jessica Lange walked into the kitchen near the end of the film with a huge cake for Lennie. It was just so sweet, and how she found her trying to hurt herself, just the way she didn't quite understand yet comforted her was also very heartbreaking and sweet at the same time. Then she cuts three huge pieces of cake for each one of them. K, I'm gettin' choked up over here. So that's all. I loved this film.

I love this movie, always happy when it happens to be on. You named some great parts, especially the scene with the chandelier, and the popcorn! So funny like she keeps forgetting what she's doing. In fact Sissy Spacek in this movie is just great. Love how straight they play their roles; I imagine them breaking up laughing while filming.

I love Meg trimming her bangs with the nail scissors. Had me laughing right off the bat.

This movie is brimming with great actors. But I think the dark vibe Jessica Lange gives Meg sets her apart. She's my favorite of the sisters. And she and Sam Shepard are so sexy together. So often, real-life couples have little on-screen chemistry. But those 2 burn up the screen in this.

I saw it at the movies Christmas day in 1986 and watched it again last night twenty five year afterwards. It's held up pretty well over the years.
As a Southern, what really sets the mood of the tragic comedy to me is the montage of scenes we see from the bus ride as Meg comes home, combined with the family Victorian home that's in terrible demise and the cheesy modern homes built directly beside it.
The hospital where Old Granddaddy was dying was an old two story wood building known in the old south as a sanitarium.
By the eighties, prosperity was all but completely gone from the more rural areas as jobs and people moved to the urban areas. Where Steel Magnolias focused on the lives of a select wealthy few, COTH didn't shy away from the depression and poverty and how it effected those who lived in it.
