A true madman... but not in Crawlspace

I have always been a fan of Kinski, and his ability to portray the madness or hysteria that lurks within the hearts and minds of men. However, in this movie i feel as though Kinski gave a sup-par performance. In places where his intenstiy should have been highetend, it sometimes just fell flat. In all he just seemed awkward movie, as though he was an actor playing a part, as opposed to being the character. He did not let his demons be unleashed through the film.

What do you think are the best Kinski performances? I have been wanting to get into him but the list of his movies is pretty daunting. Can you recommend some really good ones? I love horror, suspense, weird, creepy, surreal movies. I liked Crawlspace quite a bit but now I just want more Kinski! Hahaha!

Maybe he's just an overrated actor that takes roles for the money?

By all accounts the man was a completely unprofessional and confrontational prick. The director this movie even made a short film about how insufferable he was to deal with (called "Please Kill Mr. Kinski") so it's possible that he just didn't feel like trying on certain days. I did, however, dig Klaus in this as it played more toward his talents. If you wanna see him phone it in, watch Schizoid.
