Coincidence?

I don't know how many fans of Suicide(band) that are looking at this, but their song "Frankie Teardrop" (on their first album) is extremely similar to the plot of this film. although it is not verbatim, it's still pretty damn close. their first album came out roughly 9 years before this film was even made, do you think the link is just a coincidental?

Wow, you got it. I was deeply influenced by SUICIDE'S Frankie Teardrop. the story of that character stayed with me and haunted me for years. That's the genesis of Frankie Dunlan, in COMBAT SHOCK. In twenty years, only one other person has made the connection, a guy from Denmark who came to England ten years ago to see Combat Shock in a theater.

Right now I'm working on LIFE IS HOT IN CRACKTOWN in LA, then I'll be back in Berlin working on a new book, I hope. Thanks for the words and support on CS. I can't believe it's still around. I made it basically as a student film. I think it shows in parts.

anyway, take care for now and thanks again,
Buddy Giovinazzo

Respect to you Buddy, a truly powerful and haunting film. The budget limitations may be there to see in parts, but thats not an issue when a film kicks this much ass. I thought I had seen every Nam related film of any note (had'nt even heard of this until fairly recently)but I was wrong. Top marks to your bro aswell, the guy turned in a wicked performance. Good luck with future work mate.

I'll add my 2 cents here as well. Just watched this last week, after first reading about it back in the 80s; in Cinefantastique, if I remember rightly, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I thought it was excellent, and kudos for generating a really desolate and bleak atmosphere. No amount of budget or technical skill can replace the ability to successfully create a unique mood and ambience, which this film has in spades.
Anyway, back on topic - I haven't listened to Suicide in years, but they came into my head whilst watching this - I think it was probably an auditory suggestion. I really liked the soundtrack, and recommend a double bill viewing of this with Brother From Another Planet: same time, same city, same electro-synthy type soundtrack.

Combat shock was a student project? Where does a student get $40K from?

reply

Trey Parker's Cannibal! The musical was a student film and the budget was well over $100,000. Getting financing for a film really isn't too hard depending on who you know.

yeah, in my recent viewing of the film, I can definitley see the connection between the film & the Suicide track (The early demo version entitled "Frankie Teardrop Vs. the Space Invader" is a whole different story, though)

terrific film & a great song as well

I warned you not to go out tonight
