Oh no, its not funny!

I saw this film on its first theatrical release in 1986, and for the next 16 years or so have bored my friends and family about how good this film is, well I saw it again on T.V yesterday, and, oh my God, Stinker, this was not the film I remember, just remember people you can never go back!

You know what?! Thats exactly what happened to me..!!! I remember the first time i watched it... and couldnt stop laughing... then like 5 years later... i didnt find it anyway near as funny.... but then 2 or 3 years after that.... (i watched it again yesterday....) and i finally appricate the movie for what it is...... When i thought about it.... for its time... it was a damn great comedy... few cheap laughs.... but funny.... my fav scene would hav 2 be with the two barry's.... and how they went to get pot at that tribal place...!!!! and then how barry (rick moranis) got stuck on the wind sail....
it was a damn good flick.... i think u gotta watch it at the right time.... i think its one of those movies that u hav 2 b in a silly mood 2 enjoy... what do u think?

This movie got better with age to me. When I was a kid I thought it was very funny, but was only 6 or so and didn't get everything. I didn't even know what marijuana was, and I certainly didn't understand all of the banter between Robin Williams and Peter O'Toole which to me get's funnier every time I see it. I love that's it's not a typical over the top Robin Williams performance (as most of them were back in those days). I find his anger and annoyance to be very funny, and to see him slowly go from laid back Island Jack to the most uptight guy on the island cracks me up. I love the scene where the women are trying to go topless (Oh My God It's Spreading!!!). It's one of those things that you're not sure why you're laughing, it's not obvious humor, but it makes you laugh all the same.

I'm not surprised that the first poster didn't find it funny, different people with different tastes. In high school I thought Fletch was the funniest movie ever, and I still do. I must have watched that movie with 20 different friends at different times and all of them hated it, didn't understand it, or the humor just wasn't for them. Then one night I showed it to a friend and he nearly pissed himself laughing. People react differently to different kinds of films, nothing wrong with that.

This is great fun! Full of cheesy one-liners and the banter between Robin Williams and Peter O'Toole is wonderful. Take it for what it is: an 80's SCTV comes to big screen. The really funny exchanges between Rick Moranis and Eugene Levy are priceless.

Brian Doyle-Murray: "What kind of name is Moniker?"

Just plain goofy fun. And Twiggy never looked better!

Anybody remember another early eighties comedy called "The Party Animal"

I was born in the same year this movie was made, I remember watching the TV version and then the version on HBO. It was hilarious to me as a kid just because Robin Williams was in it, but even now when I understand the dialogue and the sexual references I believe this is a Harold Ramis cult classic. Hail! Harold Ramis!

Okay, you have to keep in mind that this movie was made in 1986 So
don't expect way too much, but, it IS funny in a campy sort of way... I find it along the lines of Captain Ron, National Lampoon's European
vacation (the old one where they go to Paris), hmm...what else...My
Blue Heaven...Part of the charm is appreciating the age of the film- it's like
watching old SNL episodes... oldies but goodies!

What does being made in 1986 have to do with not expecting too much?

That's a dumb comment, there are good films from 1950 and bad ones, and the same is true about 2012.

That post makes no sense, this isn't a very good film, 1986 has nothing to do with it.

It's funny how things age differently. Some films I remember fondly from decades ago I feel are pretty bad when I watch them now, some I like just as much as I remember or even more.

This film I only watched for the first time yesterday. I didn't recall even hearing of it before I found it last week, which is odd, because I was seeing a ton of films in 1986 and beyond, just like now, and I had been a fan of Robin Williams, SCTV, and Simon Jones for quite a few years by that point (the latter, at that point, solely due to his portrayal of Arthur Dent in the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy miniseries).

I thought this was uneven. Parts were funny, parts were pretty dead in the water. The characters and material utilizing the SCTV alumni were the best, imo.

I saw the great actors in this... O'toole, Moranis, Williams and I was wow, this is a WINNER... BLAH BLAH... it's so bad it's not even funny to watch ! Lame jokes, bad acting, horrible script... well maybe it will be better than some of the comedies of nowadays, but seriously, it was dissapointing !!

I think it's good fun. Not a great film, but amusing. One of the few Robin Williams films I've seen where he doesn't burst into tears. And Peter O'Toole cheerfully hamming it up is always enjoyable.
