Why such a low rating?

I love this movie. Sure it isn't a 7 or 8, but a 4.4? Hmm

I have no idea why such a low rating. Most films rated this low have lots of "I want my money and/or 2 hours back." I don't see this here; more the opposite ("I love this.", "Cheesy, but fun", etc.). I wouldn't go so far as a 7 or 8, - maybe 6.5. Either way, one of the most (if not the most) under-rated films on IMDB.

Because people are stupid, that's why.

Both of Williams' 1986 comedies (this and The Best Of Times) weren't very well received. Although both were HBO staples of the time and developed a cult following. I think it's because it wasn't the type of comedy people really wanted out of him at the time. He became famous for really over-the-top wacky comedy, and in both of these films he's really toned down. In Club Paradise he says some pretty nutty things, but delivers them in a really dry way. That's what makes them so funny. In Best Of Times he was playing a sort of mild-mannered loser, a funny character but not in the traditional Robin Williams way. They weren't his first attempts at doing something that wasn't Mork, he had done some drama and things like Moscow On The Hudson, but those were movies that had something else going for them. These two movies were just straight up comedies, but weren't comedic enough for a lot of people I think.

If you like a movie -- if you LOVE a movie -- don't worry about what others think. It doesn't matter. Enjoy it, revel in it, run barefoot through it; to hell with what others say.

I recognize the great films and what makes them great. I can see why very good films are not quite great ones. But that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy "lesser" films. As an example, and many of you will laugh and scoff when I say that I can enjoy a movie like Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. But just because a "lesser" movie can make me smile or laugh or cry doesn't mean that I think it's a great movie. Deuce isn't. Neither is Club Paradise. But they don't have to be. They are entertainment, and both are worthy of my time. (Please don't make an issue that I'm lumping these two together. There are significant differences. My point is simply that I am entertained by both.)
