One of the strangest movie posters ever

I mean really, what hell is up with the poster for this movie? You'd think the movie is a Japanese anime or a music video from the looks of it. But no, it's about Daryl Hannah growing up with Neanderthals!

You have to take in context the time this poster was made. This was at the height of artist like Patrick Nagel, very stylized high contrast poster work. This type of art was used a lot of album covers.

Looks like something out of The Kiss or something though she does look like that in a key scene.

reply

I'll bet Cro-Magnons really looked like Hannah.

SPOILERS AHEAD. The movie poster is the look Ayla has painted on her face in a pivitol scene in the movie. Ayla is painted that way as a healer, and in the cave scene where the warriors are to fight a bear. The scene is important because Ayla involves herself to save an injured warrior, practically coming face to face with the bear itself. It might be the bravest thing the other males have ever seen a female do. Also in that scene, Ayla's only possibility for love (up until that point) was a man who was killed trying to save her.

I think the face paint also represents her strength and acheivements in general in spite of many odds stacked against her. It represents her power as a prominent tribe member and someone who repeatedly beat the odds that had been dealt to her.

The poster itself is beautiful and striking, something that draws in a viewer. To have Ayla standing in a grassy field would have been rather boring in comparision.

archeologists claim to have found many badly deteriorated Lady Schick's razors at many Neanderthal camp sites

reply

It was designed to show off Darryl Hannah's face.

reply

Nah, one of the best posters ever.

reply

I prefer this compared to the garbage that throws up every character on the poster
