did the actors need to learn to sign??

It's been a coule years since I saw this movie but I was wondering if the actors need to learn how to sign??

reply

William Hurt was her boyfriend so hecould do it anyway I guess. I don't know, though if he was already her boyfriend when they did the movie. They had this awesome chemistry...
And the actors who actually do sign in the movie obviously had to learn it. The rest... who knows!?

Yes to my knowlege all the actors in this movie are deaf and use asl. Marlee matlin herself is deaf and uses asl. I say this because I can tell by how the kids prounce their words they sound as though a deaf or hard of hearing person would sound.

reply

no they were all born knowing sign language.

wow way to be a jerk, drunkdaddy...

the answer to the question is yes, Hurt had to learn sign language to play this role. Here is a quote from the NY Times, and the article link:

"Because the part of Sarah is played by Marlee Matlin, a deaf actress, and the students are also portrayed by people with hearing problems, Ms. Haines and the co-screenwriter, Hesper Anderson, as well as Mr. Hurt, had to learn sign language. ''To direct, I used what is called 'total communication' in the deaf community,'' Ms. Haines said. ''That's whatever works - gestures, body language, lip reading, signing and full-time interpreters.'' "

William Hurt learnt sign language pretty much fluently and acted his heart out in this film but lost Best Actor to Paul Newman for The Color Of Money. No offence to Newman but his older "Fast" Eddie Felson was pretty simple and dull. Nowhere near worthy of an oscar. The voters must of been on crack that night. The real winner was so ovious. Hurt went through all that for nothing. *beep* ing Academy I tell ya.

I agree completely. He should have won. He was great in Kiss Of A Spider Woman as well (he won the Oscar the year before for that), which was also well deserved.

I think these days they'd just do it with CGI.

Obviously, Piper Laurie never bothered. I've seen Laurie done well acting on other films, but ruined COALG. The humongous plot hole shows a born-deaf child whose mother does not know how to sign. She just moves her hands around, like in B movies which supposedly makes clear to non-English characters.

I didn't see that as a plot-hole at all. I took it to mean PL played the part of a single overworked mother with somewhat of a chip on her shoulder who never did learn ASL very well. She signed as if she did "just learn a little bit" and barely could communicate with her daughter. She admitted they didn't talk because her daughter didn't want to talk to her, and she was tired of folks coming by every so often to talk about her daughter and, in her words, to blame her for her daughters volatile, somewhat rebellious nature. I thought she played the part perfectly.

Yes they did and their teacher was my teacher and you can find his name at the end of the credits (when he mentioned this in class, I had to run and rent the movie). There is a scene when Hurt and Marlee are "fighting" in sign and Hurt signs something exactly like my teacher. The teacher of course was deaf and an actor himself. Unfortunately, he passed away prematurely. He signing was wonderful (mother/father deaf). He could paint a picture with his hands. He used to talk to himself in sign language. He'd be writing on the board and forget how to spell and then have to look at his hands to get the words. He was a great story-teller. His signing was so expressive, you didn't need to know sign to understand a story he was telling.

Thank you for sharing. You described your teacher and his abilities very well. He sounds fascinating.
