Boys on a waiting list...

to have sex with Sarah, a list that her sister was in charge of. Absolutely heartbreaking. Does the book explain why her sister would be involved/in charge/ encouraging any of it?

reply

The play does not explain it, but my guess would be ... a teenage girl (Sarah's sister) wants to be popular, with other girls and especially with boys, and if she can provide easy access to sex, that makes her cool and popular. Sarah was willing to do it, and her sister perhaps didn't realize how it tormented her. On top of this, there was probably some resentment from the older sister at the extra attention, the extra needs, of her younger sister, so setting her up as an unwitting whore is a way to get back at her.

Just reading between the lines, I would say the older sister was being at least partially malevolent, because she knew what she was doing was wrong and was not good for Sarah, but probably not completely evil, in that she probably didn't realize how much it was affecting her. She was seeing it as a teenage girl having sex, so what's the big deal? But she didn't realize that it was more than that -- that Sarah was being used, knew she was being used, was being made to feel like trash.

I was under the impression that the sister was receiving some kind of payment for the sex, but this was unbeknownst to Sarah.

I would guess that the only payment Sarah's sister received was status and popularity.

But how is this so? I can imagine some making digs or jibes at the siter for using her own flesh and blood. Kids are kids but they're not completely devoid of morals or common sense. Using your own sister would cause that person to be looked down upon. At lease I would & most of my friends would. Even if she was hanging out with the drunk jock crowd. She's doing this to her own sister. I think even that would raise eyebrows.

It is pretty despicable isn't it? It was heart-breaking as well. As to your better morals I agree, most people...even teenagers...would disapprove of using one's sister that way. Maybe the author had actually heard of something similar and decided to put it in just to demonstrate, in general what CAN happen between siblings.

I didn't know it was a book but I assumed her sister pimped her out for popularity.
