Connection to Phantom...?

This may be really weird and random of me, but when rewatching CBM2 sometime last year, I was struck with this thought out of the blue that the plot of this movie (the Dark Heart plot, not the Care Bears growing up plot) was really quite similar to some elements of the story of The Phantom of the Opera. For instance:

The main girl's name is Christy in the CBM2, and the main girl's name is Christine in POTO.

Christy is never the best at anything in camp until Dark Heart comes and makes her Camp Champ. Christine is a chorus girl until Erik/the Phantom comes and makes her a star.

C'mon. Dark Heart and Christy SO have a little love thing going on.

"Good or bad, you're still a person". Total Phantom.

Caring for Christy is Dark Heart's redemption; caring for Christine is Erik's redemption.

That's all that I can remember now, at 1:30 in the morning, hehe, but I'm sure some more will come to me. Does anyone agree? Or disagree? I don't really have anything to say about it, I just think it's a funny coincidence and I wonder if they meant it to be kinda Phantom-ish.

Yeah... I was thinking the saaaaame thing. It kind of freaked me out in the end when he kept calling her 'this child'. It was reminding me of 'angel of music'.

I think I know what you mean.
It's been 10 years or more since I saw this movie, and the inter-plot of the "villain" and the little girl forming a strange bond of friendship always stuck in my head.
Now when I look at the plot, it seems a little dark and angsty (like one of those sick fanfics flying around these days)
The scene where DH had to admit that he cared about Christy didn't feel smaltzy, rather it felt like one of those hold-your-breath moments during the tragic scene in an opera.

I could have gone without the end though. Seeing DH(as a boy) splashing around with the Bears as if they all weren't in moratl danger before is stretching it a bit.

The scene where dark heart had to say he cared for kristy was really emotional, i didnt think it was cheesy at all. It was lovely.

Ooh I love the POTO connection because I can totally see it! Not only Christy's connection to The Boy, but also Dark Heart/Boy's obsession with putting the Care Bears in a chandalier, and then nearly dropping it on the kids! At least Christy & the Boy had a better potential for a future together, than Christine & Phantom Erik from POTO.

Aw The Boy telling Christy that he cares for her now reminds me of the scene from Gossip Girl where Blair told Chuck she loved him, but he choked up and brushed her off. (I'd love to see another GG scene where Chuck reciprocates the love to Blair.)
