Best version!!!

Hi all! This is my first message on these boards and I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed "The Canterville Ghost". Saw it for the first time in the late 80's and immediately fell in love with Alyssa Milano, (She's still a wet dream ;) ) Also Sir Gielgod was brilliant and made me laugh on some occations and cringe with fear on others... especially when he "introduces" himself... scary... Anyway, hope you anjoyed it as much as I did and live peacefully ever after...

I have to agree it is my favorite film of all time. Watched when I was about seven and I was hooked was looking for it for bout 10 years then three copies turned up at once! I managed to even get the musical score and a press kit. Though I have a good DVD and Ipod transfer IT SHOULD BE ON DVD THEN MY COLLECTION WILL BE COMPLETE. So glad to see there are others out there that apreciated the film :)

It's my favorite version as well, it was actually on Comcast OnDemand a few months back and I got a great recording of it on DVD.

If you expect the unexpected doesn't the unexpected then become the expected?

Sony released a manufactured-on-demand DVD-R of the film last September.

I finally managed to get myself a copy, had to download it from YouTube as the only dvd version is Region 1, which doesn't play on my dvd players.

This film brought back so many memories for me. Furthermore, I watched it with my other half who had never seen it before.

Have to say that I have only seen one other version and that was the Patrick Stewart version, this is far superior

It's 'just' a TV movie with TV stars of the time, but it's amazing how many folks agree that this is the best version.

The first I know of had Charles Laughton as the Ghost (The Canterville Ghost (1944)), also staring Robert Young and Margaret O'Brien. That version had a cast with more star power, but I've never been able to make it all the way through.

With the exception of Sir John, this version is all B-list casting, but the film works so well that it they might as well be A-list. The scenes with Milano and Sir John have real emotion in them, and you can't help but be touched. The ending has me in tears.

I'll likely order this recently available DVD version in the near future.

Yes, Milano is adorable here.
And the zoom-into-painting-ending does it better than The Shining :)
