Wondering if this is the movie I remember, or another one

Ok, I remember watching a movie on Comedy Central a couple time in the mid 90s, and I think the movie was made in the late 80s or early 90s. The movie is about a kid that just moved into one of the boroughs of New York, I think it was either Brooklyn or Bronx. He meets a somewhat chubby kid, and then 2 or 3 other kids in the school. He falls in love with a girl that lives in the back of her father's store, and I think he's mentally retarded. Toward the end of the movie, the school dance occurs. Before it starts, the priest lectures all the boys on how bad lust is. Then 2 of the boys sneak out of the dance and drive away using one of the boy's father's car, which they park on a retracting bridge. The bridge opens, and then when it closes, it wrecks the whole underside of the car. One other things I remember that happens in the movie is that the police take the girl's father away since the father is not mentally able to take care of her, and they take her away too.

I don't think it's this movie, but I was just wondering if anyone possibly remembers this movie at all.

No, this isn't the movie you remember. You're thinking of 'Catholic Boys' (I think it's called 'Heaven Help Us' in America).

The last poster is correct. The movie is available and appears on cable frm time to time. It's called "Heaven Help Us" and stars Andrew McCarthy, Kevin Dillon, Mary Stuart Masterson, Donald Sutherland, John Heard and Wallace Shawn as the priest who delivers the memorable lecture on lust.

I love Heaven Help Us. Great and under-rated flick! Love Brighton beach too.

Well, it ain't this film.

The father wasn't mentally retarded - he was melancholy. If I remember correctly, it was because his wife had died.

And as everyone else has said, yes, it's a great, great movie.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
